I love this movie because it effectively creates its own world, both ridiculous and yet remarkably faithful to human behavior. It's funny, brilliant and touching, I could watch it 100 times in a row and not get sick of it.

Seeing this again only serves to solidify my appreciation for what Wes Anderson does so well--take lonely and self-absorbed characters, and through their trials and our laughter, bring them to a place where they begin to see something of the world outside their own concerns. Rushmore is one of his best films in this regard.

If we all had been living in Anderson universe, life would have been more fullfiling. Scale shifts in the movie are flawless, cast is well-cast and performances are ambitious. Only problem might be in the tone as the movie becomes more down to earth at the end. Still it is a deliberate choice. Rushmore acts as a caricaturization lens that doesn't filter out the details. Max Fischer is another breed of a character, not the usual inverted genius. Trademark for the Am. Indep. Cinema.

This was the last Wes Anderson picture that wasn't full of his future twee cartoonish atmospherics. Which also means it's the last work he directed that I outright love. The movie is indebted to The Graduate and Harold & Maude--making it the 90's indie film version of those 60's/70's New Hollywood coming-of-age works. But this one gets kudos for becoming darker as it goes on, culminating with these lonely people finding hope in one another. Highly recommended and worth the praise.

Jason Schwartzman puts in an brilliant and iconic performance as Max Fischer. Schwartzman's chemistry with the legendary Bill Murray is fantastic, and as their characters peculiar friendship unfolds you can't help but be swept along. Typical of Wes Anderson, "Rushmore" is very funny, with a snappy script and very easy on the eye with a great soundtrack. A wonderful story of love, betrayal, youth and adulthood. Sublime.

Schwartzman and Murray are perfect as a pair of self-centred love rivals, one schoolboy and the other business magnate. The script is wonderful not only in its abundant humour but also in how it makes its objectionable characters so utterly lovable. Combining this with an accomplished supporting cast of eccentric and memorable figures, a top-notch soundtrack, inventive editing and a heart-warming ending makes for a piece that Anderson will struggle to ever surpass in quality.

Hilarious film, Anderson's script oozes with atmosphere and wit, without a doubt his most accomplished and accessible (non-animated) feature (I really owe TRTs a rewatch). Schwartzman's great as the love struck, self-aware, cocky Max Fischer, but Murray even more so, being the highlight once again of every film he's in. Loved it.

The first Wes Anderson film I saw still seems like the best (probably). To me, Anderson is an excellent director who has yet to completely fulfil the promise suggested by his very obvious talent. On the other hand, he hasn’t made a bad film either, and the pleasures given by his work greatly exceed those of the vast bulk of contemporary cinema. A kind of resistance to that work also seems to have developed in certain quarters: almost a resentment about his success, perhaps.

Sweet. Touching. Meticulous. Funny. Clever: Anderson once again creates a dollhouse world with human feelings. One of my favorite Bill Murray performance along with Schwartzman. Anderson's worlds are free from complications of reality and in a sense closer to dreams than even many surrealist films. His work also has an almost OCD quality to it which I am not sure how exactly gels with his stories or more appropriately fantasies.

Early Anderson film is still his best, made before the quirk became shtick. There is an authenticity and tenderness to this film that is lacking from the ones that followed--excluding Moonrise Kingdom--and Anderson's direction is far less self conscious. Max Fischer is a great character and Schwartzman plays him with just the right amount of strength and vulnerability, while Murray is the clear standout as his melancholy millionaire rival who hates his life.

The good thing is that this movie has Olivia Williams who is captivating as usual. The bad thing is Jason Schwartzman who was annoying, but the war with him and Bill Murray is somewhat entertaining. The plot and script are pretentious and sometimes stupid. There is some creativity but not much spark in the telling of the story. I can recommend it mostly for Olivia, as for the rest, just tolerable.

For some reason, I have the first DVD release of this, despite not buying it until the 2010s. It's supposed to be in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but it felt even more condensed than that. This has nothing to do with the film, but I feel like I needed to write that. Also, did you know DVDs used to have recommendations as a special feature? Maybe it was just this one. But, you should really check out Brassed Off.

Interesting to finally see Wes Anderson's breakthrough all these years later, as he's burrowed deeper and deeper into fussy artifice in later films. Ironically, this had the effect of making Rushmore feel fresh and novel, more natural and spontaneous and every bit as funny and charming as his later work, if perhaps not quite as polished or emotionally affecting as my favorites of his.

One of the best sophomore films from a director ever (up there with Pulp Fiction). Wes Anderson is one of the only filmmakers who can make his audience root for characters one kind of despises. Max is a dick, but I couldn’t help but feel for him. I think it’s because human nature and condition is captured so well in Anderson and Wilson’s writing and Schwartzman’s amazing performance. Riotously hilarious at times, very bleak and heartfelt at others. I love this movie.

Wicked, strange and still heartbreaking, Rushmore is the ultimate indie feature of 1998 and it's been very imitated ever since. I adore Wes Anderson's cinematic sensibilities: the aura of melancholy, the careful framing, the color palettes, the choice of music, and so forth. The last 30 seconds of Rushmore before the credits roll are heart-achingly perfect. On the other hand, the character of Max Fischer is such a despicable little shit that it's very hard to root for him. Top badass moment? A film set in a world that on a subtle level has absolutely nothing in common with the real one. So many things just wouldn’t be allowed/possible. When I was 15, the highlight of my week was history with Miss. Lamb. (Until she came in one day and was called Mrs. Snowdon instead, which precipitated a tsunami of depression that swept the entire male population of the school.) 1 chainsaw (yellow and clearly not running, despite the engine sound), no cats or decapitations.

The wittiness of the dialogue, the whimsy of the world, the blurring of the boundaries of child and adult - these elements that seem to permeate all of his work are found in Rushmore and to such a beautiful effect. It's interesting to see how Anderson's distinctive style manages to empower his every production, regardless of budget or genre. But when I compare Rushmore to, say, Moonrise Kingdom, I become increasingly annoyed with the self-absorbing universe and the non-existence of any connections to my own perception of reality. While the film's occasionally good for a laugh, I became bored about halfway in, lacking any sense of development. At least I enjoyed the ending.

My first Wes Anderson, my favorite Wes Anderson, and the one I identify with the most as someone who grew up always having an easier time talking to the adult staff than the other kids. Thankfully, I didn't want to bone any of them. I hear Rushmore criticized a lot for Wes Anderson's style still being rough, but no one ever backs this up. It feels like any of his later movies. "Rushmore" is initially indifferent, but as it progresses, it blossoms into something almost inexplicably affecting. The plot may seem pointless, but the script's eccentric flourishes are occasionally near-brilliant, Anderson's visual style is unique, the performances resonate and there's a great deal of sentiment to go along with the oddities. Although there are humdrum stretches during the first half, the ending is absolutely heart-warming, and for no apparent reason.
