Every second is filled with emotions, which will not sooth everyone. The film starts and ends with the highly emotional Bon Iver singing about loss and lost promises. We are so inclined to feel every second of the film, that it get's a bit tiring. But, still a good film, with Audiard's keen cinematographic eye being especially indulging. And there's a lot of handicapped sex as a sort of sick cherry on top of the pie. I'm sick - I know, Yeah!

(2nd viewing) Schoenaerts holds his own against the ever-devoted Cotillard, however, I remained thoroughly unimpressed by the film's deceptively affecting nature. Much of this stems from their awkward chemistry and the strained sentimentality percolating beneath the film's crude surface, culminating in a ludicrous 3rd act that had me smack my forehead in utter disbelief. *sigh*

Nice performances, especially Cotillard. And for the most part quite pleasing visually - also freakily well-done with Cotillard's legs. But the story doesn't quite work for me.

Cotillard and Schoenarts are both great and the story is engaging despite being a bit melodramatic at times. Too bad for it that Amour came out in the same year so it didn't get a chance to compete for a Foreign language Oscar.

The fragmented story isn't terrible but it's disjointed and rather simple. Not a simplistic one, however, the somewhat contrieved ending aside, but it's definitely guilty of (and/or proud to, whatever one thinks of its priorities) downplaying plot in favor of visceral moments. To Audiard's credit, although he sometimes wallows in the extreme conditions for (and of) the protagonists, his film is believable and never becomes disgustingly sentimental. Very able performances; some exquisite imagery.

A brilliant film which unfortunately seems to forget what it's about half the time. The way I saw it, the film is almost entirely about Cotillard's character and her relationship with the protagonist, but she seems continually shunted aside to make way for other, far less interesting subplots. Might have dropped my score a bit for that reason if not for the spectacular pefrormances of Schoenaerts and the aforementioned Cotillard.

Audiard is just...my guy. He makes films that are so viscerally satisfying, and yet so intellectually compelling at the same time. Audiard's heroes are characters born of brutality, often repulsive in their behavior, but they also always have dreams, and you just have to find out if they can rise above themselves just a little bit to get a win for the human race. And even then, you're never given their full story, just a little arc in their lives on the road to understanding. Loved this flick.

Nice work from Marion Cotillard and not bad with Mathias Schoenaerts either. One looked like broken inside and the other out. Or was it the way around?

Two films in one... at first you squirm in your seat at the difficult, disturbing, taboo matters, and then it ultimately turns inspirational. I was actually expecting a darker, psychological second half to the film - I guess I'm glad it lightened up. And then you've got the Dardenne-like father-son duo living their messy, gritty, pitiful lives. It's like kitchen-sink realism, but doesn't feel truly authentic. Another impressive one from Audiard, though I don't think it will become a favourite.

An emotionally charged look at two handicapped (one emotionally and one physically) people who happen into a relationship. The lead performances are among the best of the year and director Jacques Audiard proves that A Prophet was no fluke. Here he handles the rough content with ease, drawing the viewer in despite the very graphic and disturbing plot points.

Nice love story moved more by physical moods than tender feelings, in which Audiard's intimate, careful hand-held camera nicely fits Schoenaerts' -- here, better than in Bullhead -- and Cotillard's intense performances. Despite the quasi-tragedy near the end, it's a rewarding, often brutal romance, obsessed with the thin lines and tiny acts that generally make people crude or lovable, distant or affecting.

An infinitely better handling of disability than Intouchables, this film's unembarrassed frankness is helped by a likeable performance from Schoenaerts, whose unruffled horniness helps Cottilard (terrific) come to terms with her terrible injury. I liked seeing a side of France I hadn't seen on film before, and there are some lovely sensual moments in the cinematography. The last act felt a little forced and overly symbolic but still, a pretty good film.

Terrific acting, especially from Marion Cotillard. And the sound design is masterfully done. But it's really hard to relate to the characters making large portions of the film utterly boring.

I'm usually very suspicious of well-meaning twaddle about handicaps or poverty, let alone both at the same time, but Audiard brings his usual eye for detail and ear for authentic dialogue (some of which might not come through in translation) and so the result is funny, uncondescending and surprising, eschewing most of the clichés about its subjects. Schoenaerts is excellent in the not at all easy role of a romantic lead whose emotional vocabulary is close to nil.

Quite a big disappointment, this film could have had a lot to offer but fails miserably. Schoenaerts will probably never be my favourite actor, and some of his fighting scenes were quite annoying. Cotillard is better, but never reaches the level of her best performances. The fact that this film was a big hype locally, didn't really help either...

The visual command reminds me that this is truly an Audiard film. And he does achieve a believable and occasionally affecting, if somewhat nondescript, brand of realist melodrama. It's just not as compelling or hard-hitting as his previous directorial efforts.

Oh boy, another romance film about a total asshole chad, but he's attractive, so Marion Cottilard is all over him. Although I liked Audiard's recent film, this one feels like he has no concept of what situations to put characters through and how it will change them. There's a fair amount of drama here, yet it doesn't intertwine with the characterization much at all. But if we put in some artsy lens flares, that'll at least keep the European film critics circle jerking over this.

This one is hard to rate. I did enjoy the film but I really hated the main character. Talk about the worlds worst dad. He is also just very unlikable. He has about one redeeming moment in the film but he's a face palm waiting to happen. Cotillard was stunning as ever, playing a difficult role as a handicapped woman. Her story is touching but you find yourself wondering why she sticks around with such an idiot. Beautiful imagery and great music really help the film not seem as long.

The flow of the movie has some flaws but Marion Cotillard's amazing performance (and excellent jobs done by the rest of the cast) lifts this movie up. A melodrama that does its melodrama duty; make sure you bring your handkerchief.

Quite lovely. I liked the lack of romance in the core relationship, and how non-traditional and kind of transgressive it was, so I was slightly disappointed that it got a little gooey in the third act. But Audiard's direction, and his approach to narrative, is an absolute pleasure to experience, as always.

I don't feel much for this film. It's pretty average in terms of its narrative. I don't doubt Audiard's talent -- overall this is an exceptionally well made film -- but I do question how he jarringly handled theme and character development here. Schoenaerts only changed via a freak accident and, ultimately, there are no consequences for his boorish behavior for the other ninety-nine percent of the film. Meanwhile, Cotillard is given a small slice of the film to blossom before becoming a crutch.

It's not a film with a whole lot of plot to it, but it exudes emotion on many different levels. I was engaged in the story and was pleasantly surprised at the performance of Matthias Schoenaerts. I've never seen any films that he's been a part of, but his acting bodes well for a very successful career in the future. I really can't put into words what I liked about the movie, it just did its job, it entertained and moved me. That's all I want from a film and it delivered the goods.

I never realized a Katy Perry song could move me - now THAT takes some serious talent. Cotillard and Schoenaerts are both amazing in this. This had a lot of grit and brutality, as did Audiard's film film "A Prophet", while showing you some heartbreaking, delicate, and intimate moments as well. Nothing ever felt forced or out of place, even when the film takes some turns you don't expect. Although the focus gets somewhat shifted towards the end, it's overall a great film and worth rewatching.

Sujet de fonds, focus sur la place des handicapés,très bien filmé par Audiard, très bien joué avec un prix d'interprétation qui serait largement mérité pour Marion Cotillard et pourquoi pas la Palme d'or à la clef ?

It dwells a bit much on some of the elements, so I had preferred it around 1h30m. That aside, then "Rust and Bone" definitely stands out from the bunch. It is very serious in what it does, very harsh and probably quite realistic in it's view on life. Something we only seem to see in European films. I quickly got an expectation of something bad could happen at any given moment, and that feeling lasted throughout the film. In moments, luckily, Cotillard gets to be as lovely as I know her to be.

Truly great acting by the mains and great music choices. Bon Iver suits it so well. I felt more emotion at the choice of music than the final closing message. The plot loses its way a couple of times and the pacing is a bit off, but ultimately, it's a strong film.

Kind of takes the 'he's a...she's a...' setup of a stereotypical romantic movie and blasts it apart. 'He's a thuggish underground boxer and she has no legs!' Matthias Schoenaerts plays his part well, holding onto likeability while doing some shitty things. A solid entry in the 'two broken people who help each other out' genre. Oh, and the whole thing looks and sounds great, and events unfold organically. The dramatic moments have real punch.

I'm a big fan of The Beat That My Heart Skipped and enjoyed a good bit of The Prophet, but this film seems like a couple steps in the wrong (American) direction with its quasi-inspirational plotline, odd choices of English-language songs (Springsteen & Bon Iver) that take over for real emotional character development and the seen-it-coming final-reel tragedy. The attractive leads & their believable, no-nonsense relationship, economical editing & a resourceful camera kept me interested though.

I think this is typical of Audiard: if I look at the story outline alone, something about it just isn't that fulfilling. Every detail of the filmmaking is quite brilliant, though - textually, dramatically, cinematographically, the editing... and the result is persuasive, forceful and riveting. If the meta-narrative choices were a little less obvious (including one or two harrowing events that seem to be inserted for symbolistic reasons), it would have been perfect.

A superb film where Audiard seems determined to avoid falling into melodrama by all means. I liked that the main characters are both shits each in their own way - although at least the female has feelings. I didn't care for the ending, didn't find it believable, although at the moment I can't imagine a better one.

One of the year's most accomplished movies, Rust & Bone is powerfully emotional without ever feeling saccharine, a masterclass in character study and a stunning example of the magic that can happen when two actors, on top form, work together so marvellously. Audiard's direction is unfuckwithable, and the cinematography is the best of the year, but this movie lives or dies on Cotillard and Schoenaerts' performances, and they are blisteringly good.
