Horace Vendig shows himself to the world as a rich philanthropist. In fact, the history of his rise from his unhappy broken home shows this to be far from the case. After being taken in by richer neighbours he started to exhibit an obsessive and selfish urge to make more and more money, loving and leaving women at will to further this end.

it's been a long time since I've seen this, but I recall it as entertaining with a fine Zachary Scott performance.

Neatly scripted, with crisp direction and a good cast. The only thing a bit perplexing is that somehow in there we went from Horace as a kid (played by the same actor who played George Bailey as a kid btw) being sympathetic and battered by circumstances to Horace as an adult being cold and rotten to the core.

This Poverty Row Citizen Kane isn't Ulmer's best, but Sydney Greenstreet puts on a great, tragic show and singlehandedly elevates it. A few clever shots (the gun in the foreground one especially) and a restless camera keep things lively.

It takes a while before it builds up to anything. They would have benefited from cutting a bit, so it would compliment better the ending

I'm not sure it needed to be quite this long, but it's a great exploration of ruthless ambition with appropriate performances all around. The supporting cast is stronger than the lead, but Scott's slightly robotic performance fits the character well.

Enjoyable, despite some big flaws. Characters are painted with a very broad brush and the whole thing is extremely melodramatic, but there are fine performances from the whole cast and Ulmer's direction is consistently engaging. Lots of reviews mention the influence of Citizen Kane, but it seems to me that this film influenced The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) more than Citizen Kane influenced this.

A decent melodrama about a financial wizard whose ambition leads him to crush everyone in his path. The film has pretty good performances and some compelling psychodramatic elements, but man, it moves like molasses. All the life has been sucked out and it just seems to drag on and on at times. Detour is a masterpiece of economy, so I guess Ulmer works better on a microscopic budget.

This greedy melodrama did grow on me as Zachary Scott got more and more confident in his loathsome manner, but it did take a while before I got in the groove of this destruction. Much helped by interesting actors such as Louis Hayward & Sydney Greenstreet being in his web trying to fight back. If only it had a stronger start...
