Ryûzô (Tatsuya Fuji) is a retired yakuza gangster who lives a quiet unassuming life with his salaryman son, Ryuhei (Masanobu Katsumura). Still in contact with his former lieutenant, Masa (Masaomi Kondô), Ryûzô maintains his short tempo with their regular get-togethers. One day, the old gangster receives a call from an impostor pretending to be his son asking for ¥5 million. (Wikipedia)

Solid performances by the veteran actors, and Kitano's comedic background meant many of the jokes were nicely set up in an earlier scene. And yet, it's still a fairly weak showing by Kitano -- a "slice of life" drama that makes a caricature out of yakuza flicks but fails to deliver much substance to make up for it.

More gun-for-hire fare from Kitano tailored for the Japanese market. Although it touches on many of his usual themes regarding old vs new codes, fading loyalties and social estrangement, this is just a broad mainstream comedy about aging Yakuza members reuniting for a last hurrah. It's superior to its American equivalents like Stand Up Guys, and there are some funny moments and clever sight gags, but it's easy to see why international distributors generally passed on it.

While I laughed at some of the jokes, this mostly just made me feel sad.
