Africa. In the wild expanses, where bushbucks, impalas, zebras, gnus and other creatures graze by the thousands, they are on holiday. German and Austrian hunting tourists drive through the bush, lie in wait, stalk their prey. They shoot, sob with excitement and pose before the animals they have bagged. A vacation movie about killing, a movie about human nature. (73rd Venice International Film Festival)

Beautifully photographed and managed to elicit some frank and thought-provoking statements, but it seems strange to devote so much time to showing the hunt without any comment, and then present a highly polemic cut of the interviews. Also, instead of skimming over the racism issue in less than two minutes, it would have been interesting to learn more about the female characters who seem to be hunting a bit against their willl.

In the great scheme of things hunting is probably not a crime - nature is brutal and we are nature; worse things happen in slaughterhouses in our name every day. Only that these pathetic people can't find another way to get in contact with their surroundings is sad, unconsciously also for themselves. Towards the end, Seidl dips his toes into very interesting philosophical waters but leaves too many strands open. As always, he regards objectively and dispassionately.
