Safe House is edited too frenetically, shot with too much shaky camerawork, and often set in dark locations so as to make sure we don't see what's really going on. It's a combination of the three things you don't want to do if you want your audience to be able to follow along with the action scenes, and this film decides to ignore logic and utilize all three. The plot is as basic as these things come, right up to the last twist, and Denzel seemed as if he was asleep throughout the entire film.

It moves along at a brisk clip and (even phoning it in) Denzel is always entertaining to watch, but this is real, real generic Thriller 101 stuff. The narrative, characters, "twists," and action scenes here are all super-basic stuff you've seen a million times before (hell, probably a few hundred times in the TV show 24 alone). The best way to describe this movie is as irrelevant - by 2015, it will be forgotten as if it had never existed.

The performances were good, but the opening is so strong that the rest of this mediocre film let's you down slowly. Plus they put a whole lot of weight on the fact that corruption in the CIA, in a fictional film, is somehow going to resonate with the viewer.

You get two films for the price of one, Denzel with beard and without. The girlfriend angle should have been left out, totally irrelevant to the plot. But all in all it is a decent movie.

It has yet to be determined if the movie would have been more engaging had Ryan Reynolds simply just remained in the Safe House for the whole 2 hours. Am not watching this generic thriller again to find out, so I suppose the world will never know.

If you can't guess who the real bad guy is after 5 minutes, you haven't watched enough movies...But for a dumb, cliched action movie it's entertaining enough, with a good use of the South African setting.

Generic, moderately entertaining spy thriller. Surprisingly, Ryan Reynolds doesn't wreck the film. Actually he does a decent job, probably his best-ever performance. Denzel on the other hand doesn't even try... and still does okay, but this film could have been on a higher level with a better performance from him. The script is kind of weak as well and the twist is dumb, but what are you going to do. It's not the Bourne series but it's entertaining enough.

This movie had a plot twist about as shocking as the time I discovered that my toaster wasn't waterproof. This was, of course, about two-thirds of the way through the movie when I took it with me into the bathtub.

A bland movie. With twists and turns telegraphed well in advanced, Safe House lacks suspense and a reason to care for anything going on. The movie tries to impress with numerous fights and chases, but it tries to hard and ends up falling on its face. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington do give some decent performances however.

This wasn't exactly inventive and new in any way, and it's easy to be turned off by it. The highlight of this is Denzel and Reynolds. Denzel is the same character he always is, and it works. However, Reynolds hasn't really been given something like this before, as he blends into more of a comedic action star. He does pretty well here too, and the story is functional, if yet formulaic. It won't blow you away, but it's far from horrible and ended pretty nicely.

Maybe I'm being too easy on this but it was fun. It does really nothing original, and I actually saw the plot twist coming but by that point I was already havin' a good time. Denzel is always awesome, Reynolds was good too. Solid cast all around, and it was pretty thrilling. A movie doesn't have to be original, it just has to do it well, and this moved along at a good pace.

Denzel is so fast that he can outpace pursuers just by walking. Ryan Reynolds shows how great of an actor he is by almost crying about 5 times. They both are so bad ass that they can survive multiple car crashes with only slight scratches. Avoid if you like plots that make sense and characters you actually care about.

Brisk, smooth, chunky action in the Tony Scott vein. Efficient and involving; Denzel's super-authoritative, as always, and the story hums along nicely, if predictably. It would have worked better and been more crackling, though, if they hadn't portrayed Reynolds' character as so wide-eyed--and if the whole thing hadn't been so oddly bloodless.

Unlike most people I actually am ok with the shaky cam. Turns out the shaky cam helped stop the director from over doing it with the artsy angles he was going for. The acting was better than expected. More than anything it felt like a Bourne rip off with a plot that just didn't work as well. The violence was surprisingly brutal in both a good and bad way. Finally, I think Denzel has become the new Liam Neeson in that he was respected as an actor and is now just doing cheap action flicks.

A very entertaining film if you try and keep it away from comparison. It is always fun to watch Denzel Dazzle his audiences with his acting. Safe House is no different, he does just that and it proves to be just right. Could have probably been tighter, less predictable, but if for nothing else this film gets an 87 because of Denzel Washington and his ability to make anything he touches gold.

Like many others I pretty well had it set in my mind that either one of two characters was going to be involved in the inevitable plot twist, and I was right, but it wasn't poorly done. In fact, nothing in the movie was poorly done. It was another inoffensive viewing experience, good for what it was but not something I'll seek out again. It's certainly worth seeing in theatres, though. Forewarned though, if you are jumpy (like I am) this movie will pray on you. Many jumpy moments to be found.

This megawatt cast has been assembled to deliver by-the-numbers action and story that is only elevated by the fact that we have these actors that are far better than the material would have you believe. I will attest I didn't have a bad time at the film. It's adequately shot, very violent, gritty, just not for any particularly engaging reason.

Essentially, this South Africa-based thriller seems to pursue the expressionism of Tony Scott's latest films, but achieves mostly average results: Denzel is always good to watch, even in an easy role for him to play, and Reynolds, this is kind of surprising, embodies with compromise a naive but brave safe house keeper that is suddenly trapped in a net of constant betrayal -- here, it kind of resembles Enemy of the state. As a whole, just the basic post-Bourne CIA action movie.

My biggest problem was the predictability of the villain's identity. Is it too much to ask, that in one out of a hundred films, we occasionally get to be surprised by finding out who the villain is? I don't think so. Competently put together, Reynolds and Washington are two actors I like, fairly engaging plot... A pretty entertaining film, which let me down a little.

Is it just me, or has Denzel been lukewarm for the last couple of years? This was somewhat of an improvement for Reynolds, but he still doesn't have the chops to be a main character. Kinnaman continues to beef up his US release roster....

It's painfully predictable and thin, but I suppose it's also a perfectly entertaining action flick. Espinosa's style is a little too "Tony Scott-esq" for my liking, but it works well enough during the action, even if after two hours of hyper-editing and unrelenting shaky-camery, you'll have a headache! The bolted on romantic sub-plot is needless and despite his best efforts Reynolds never convinces as a CIA agent. Meh! I didn't hate it...

An unmitigated pile of shit; bar one snazzily-directed GTA-esque car chase I won't remember anything about this whatsoever. The Washington/Reynolds pairing is predictably terrible (Denzel sleepwalking his way through the film, Reynolds offsetting with relentless OTT gurning) and it's all so laughably bad but takes itself so fucking seriously. Awful score too. Why did I even watch this in the first place?

This movie started off a little weird but it picked up its pace nicely. I thought that both Reynolds and Washington played off of each other really well, although really Washington was the star of the film. Some good cameos from Farmiga and Gleeson. The story itself isn't really a new one. Spies holding onto secret files, people want them, there is betrayal and all that fun stuff. Really some of the fight scenes were the best parts of this movie, otherwise it was a yawn.

Intense thriller, can't really go wrong here with Denzel and Reynolds. Or can you. It depends on whether callously excessive violence and death bothers you. A thrill ride of action and intrigue. Ryan Reynolds was surprisingly good as the inexperienced CIA agent stepping up to apprehend and deliver his much more experienced fugitive. Many tense and exciting fight scenes, car chases and gun battles. Denzel Washington was good, except a little too calm and cool. Supporting actors were also good. The story is engaging and mostly convincing with only a few missteps. Great music, camera work, script and production. Very entertaining.

Trite and predictable, but Washington does his job as usual and saves this from complete mediocrity. Even Reynolds is entirely watchable here. Safe House is disappointingly dull. I cannot stand Ryan Reynolds and I have absolutely no idea what Hollywood sees in him. And he just doesn't fit here. However Denzel Washington is usually Mr. Reliable and thrillers like this are bread and butter performances for an actor of his calibre. But even he can't salvage this. The overall style feels very Tony Scott, but sadly it isn't of the same quality. And it all amounts to an incredibly predictable plot and several shaky cam set pieces.

Denzel Washington being tortured? Wow, we've never see that one! Joke aside the waterboarding scene was decent, and so was the stadium scene. The film is exactly what you'd expect it to be - an enjoyable but not too-deep action thriller with an A-list of Hollywood actors making it all the more entertaining - great for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Don't think about it to much, don't hold your breath too much and you won't be disappointed. It's a generic formulaic action thriller after all.

The fact the white guy wasn't the overly trained and extra competent super agent was sort of refreshing, I mean, not everybody can be Jason Bourne. Some of the fights are raw and believable on that, and Reynolds can do serious stuff if you give him a chance. But otherwise, the action and twists were a bit generic. If Denzel was trying to seem like a blasé guy tired of this life, he rather succeed in seeming bored instead.

A very generic spy-action movie with a predictable plot. Which would be less an issue if the execution was better. Alas the frenetic shaky cam à la Tony Scott makes the action annoying instead of engaging. It’s devoid of any suspense. Plus the whole movie looks ugly with a very dark oversaturated filter. Even the combined screen presence of Ryan Reynold and Denzel Washington, phoning it in, can’t save this.

Convoluted BOURNE imitator ties itself up in too many plotting knots to be satisfying disposable entertainment, and the thin, confused screenplay means it lacks the depth and intelligence to be a “thinking man”’s action movie. Washington and Reynolds both seem bored and disconnected, and their characters are not together enough to develop the spark of an “odd couple” pairing. Some competently staged action scenes brighten things every now and then, but the film is mostly just middling blah.
