Even though there are only two set-pieces and the building-climbing is a bit repetitive, the film as a whole is amusing and at times impressive. As I'm a pussy who's afraid of heights, I noticed I was holding my breath a few times when Lloyd comes close to falling down. Not bad for a movie that's almost 90 years old! Great stunts, Lloyd is pretty fun to watch, and the opening sight-gag is absolutely hilarious.

A definite uneaven classic. The story is not very engaging and there are stretches of boring but the rightfully famous action set-pieces are staggeringly great even today (perhaps especially today). Individual gags and sequences are very well constructed but as a whole the structure is kinda crude and can easily lose your interest momentarily. Lloyd is clearly a great action man but does lacks the acting chops, physical grace and creative vision of someone like Keaton or Chaplin.

The build-up in the first 45 minutes or so is only so-so. Lloyd doesn't have the same charisma or draw that Keaton and Chaplin have, but it's not that bad. The last half hour is pretty incredible, with Lloyd doing some amazing stunt work.

The building climb is boring as hell but what came before makes up for it. "One more floor" OKAY one more floor. Guess what, climb up another floor. Oh shit there's 20 minutes left I wonder what the rest of this will be.

Ah, what a blast. Harold Lloyd is such a charming and talented guy. His persona is the ambitious young go-getter maneuvering his way through the cutthroat world of retail store capitalism, and it's great fun just to watch him survive in that environment. The building climb at the end is justly famous. It's at the same time a comic highlight, a thrilling setpiece and a great visual metaphor for the ever-futile striving for upwards mobility.

Lloyd's most iconic film may lack the pathos and insight into human behaviour displayed by other silent era greats, and the plot is entirely frivolous, but it never pretends not to be, and that's one of its greatest virtues. It is a charming film that moves at a brisk pace, and Lloyd is so intensely likeable that we identify with his plight from the outset. It culminates in one of the greatest set pieces in silent film history: a death defying climb that is daring, tense and humorous.

Enjoyable early comedy that really seems to have two parts: the first is an everyman-story of Lloyd trying to pull in a decent income for him and his fiancee, but bumbling all the way. The final twenty minutes is the famous climb to the clock, which seems more stuntwork than comedy. If you've only ever seen Chaplin and Keaton, Lloyd tends to merge the best of both.

It would almost be a fairly average silent comedy if not for it's incredible final sequence where Lloyd scales a 5 or 6 story building. Intellectually I know that there's a bit of trickery a foot. Some forced perspective is making it look higher, there's a mat hanging out of camera range and sometimes it's a stunt man. I also know that there's damn little trickery compared to today, and sometimes, Lloyd put his life at risk to deliver this bravura sequence.

This is a movie pretty much entirely designed to get us to the last 20 minutes, and what a 20 minutes it is. The first portion of the movie is enjoyable enough, but the last 20 minutes, the famous building climb set piece that leads to the clock hanging moment that is one of cinema's most enduring images, is an amazing mix of action and comedy that measures up to any era's standards. Even if you think you don't like silent movies, I think you'll like at least the last 20 minutes of this.

Rewatch. Unlike Chaplin, who I must suffer through every so often, or Keaton, who requires a break between appreciations, I could probably watch Lloyd every day and never stop enjoying it. The dude's got charisma out the wazoo. The film's climax is legendary for good reason. I've seen this in the theater twice (with live orchestra once as well) and would do so again at the drop of a hat.

Pretty fun and creative, even if only the last third is truly captivating. Some of the gags have been overused to death since this film's release, but here they still manage to be funny - for the most part, at least.

Lloyd's humor, in comparison to contemporaries Keaton and Chaplin, feels more mature and--at times--dry. His jokes and gags are more spaced, which gives the film a slower pace but can unfortunately kill some of the comedy. The centerpiece of the film features Lloyd scaling a sky-scraper, and it is certainly spectacular, but it's more notable for the thrills rather than the laughs. It's a fine film but it leaves one hoping it were a bit funnier.

The last movie to give me clammy hands was probably Gravity. The final thirty minutes of Safety Last accomplished the same thing, even though I knew fully well that nothing bad was going to happen. It's almost 100 years old, but it looks more impressive, more convincing, more aesthetically pleasing even, than a lot of modern movies. It's also charming and consistently funny, what more do you want?

While Keaton was the silent era's stuntman and Chaplin the sentimentalist, Harold Lloyd appears to be the consummate craftsman (at least in the arena of comedy.) His movies tell a clear story, are funny, romantic, and a refutation of the idea that silents are boring. Indeed, the downfall of his movies seems to be that the second act is guilty of trying to do too much (i.e., an over saturation of sight gags.)

The first part with various shenanigans as a shop clerk are fun, but the movie of course really gets going in the more famous second half in which Lloyd climbs the building. Resulting in multiple moments that still left me gasping nowadays.

While it's comedically more uneven, especially earlier on, than the more famous works of Chaplin and Keaton, the entire building-climbing sequence is both hilarious and completely unnerving. Lloyd's charisma carries this.

I'm not really a fan of comedy predicated on misunderstandings and dangerous situations, which unfortunately make up two thirds of this movie. Still, if that's your thing you'll enjoy it. There's certainly some decent comedy throughout, and the famous clock scene is very well done.

I'm not going to do the obvious thing of comparing Harold Lloyd to Chaplin or Keaton... who am I kidding, yes I am: Lloyd isn't quite up to the level of charisma and charm as those two greats, but he's damn close. I find his character very likable and fun. The gags in this movie are hit and miss, but I was smiling the entire time. And the last third, with its impressive stunt work and nail biting intensity, was as thrilling as anything I've seen from Keaton.

Harold Lloyd rightly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Buster Keaton & Charlie Chaplin, his charm in being the all-American boy-next-door is a very appealing one. 'Safety Last!' has some gob-smacking stunts & real warmth throughout, a pleasure to watch.

While he wasn't as famous as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd was very prolific in his own right. Though he's not quite as oddball as the other two. It includes the very famous sequence where he climbs a building. I found the whole thing pretty stressful to watch, to be honest. I liked the film. It had a very simple story and many great gags.

Even though I know how it was made and exactly what amount of danger Harold Lloyd was in, the sequence where he attempts to scale a twelve story building still makes me a bit nervous as he hilariously fumbles around on those precarious heights. That's what movies are about.

Not as cinematically inspired as Chaplin or Keaton's work, but undeniably funny and creative. What it (comparatively) lacks in cinematic flair, it makes up for in Lloyd's charisma and likability, and great physical gags from start to finish. The extended centerpiece of the film - the scaling of a department store as a publicity stunt - manages never to lose its steam over its half an hour or so of duration. And all the while through, you're rooting for Lloyd's vulnerable but charming character.

Imagine explaining to someone in the U.S. in 1923 that not only do people make more than $15 a week, but there's a huge push for the minimum wage to be $15 an hour now. Their first question would probably be, "what's a minimum wage?"

What starts as an amiable but fairly run-of-the-mill silent comedy, with Keaton-Chaplin overtones, is kicked up a notch by the justly famous final act, which doesn’t quite top Keaton or Chaplin, but is an impressive bit of heart-in-the-mouth stuntwork. Otherwise, Lloyd just doesn’t have the charisma or presence of his competitors and the film overall lacks the oomph and momentum required to be truly memorable.
