Clive Cussler's master explorer Dirk Pitt (McConaughey) takes on the adventure of his life when he embarks on a treasure hint through some of the most dangerous regions of West Africa. Searching for what the locals call "The Ship of Death," a long lost Civil War battleship which protects a secret cargo, Pitt and his wisecracking sidekick (Zahn) use their wits and clever heroics to help Doctor Eva Rojas (Cruz) when they realize the shop may be linked to mysterious deaths in the same area. It's got the same feel as National Treasure and Indiana Jones, but unlike Indiana Jones doesn't rely on magic to advance the plot. This is a good thing. Despite some minor issues with the action editing this is a really good action-adventure flick with a tempo that is rarely seen from Hollywood these days. There was too much crappy rock music, especially given an original score and theme song that were so good yet underused. Added points for top quality cinematography.

A lot more fun than I would have thought. I really wanted to hate the movie, if only because it's directed by Michael Eisner's son, but I couldn't. Does it have an original bone in its body? Not really. It borrows heavily from Bond and Indiana Jones, but McConaughey is likable enough to pull it off, and the 70s rock soundtrack is great. It's got a lot in common with National Treasure, but this one is much much better.

I am not a fan of McConaughey at all, his movies are usually boring and he plays the same character over and over, a film version of his true self. Yet somehow I found this film to be rather enjoyable, the pairing of Matt and Steve Zahn works at times and at others not, but you can almost let it go. The cast does decent work, the script could have been better, the movie a little less predictable, but all in all I cant really complain about what I watched, it had a point and delivered it well.

A rollicking adventure film, Sahara is a lesser-quality Indiana Jones--nothing more and nothing less than just a great popcorn flick, with exciting action that's occasionally a bit ridiculous, fun music, an easy-to-follow plot, and an easy-to-root for buddy duo in McConaughey's Dirk and Zahn's Al, the latter of whom provides a good amount of comic relief throughout. Sahara isn't deep or complicated or thought-provoking, and the acting isn't mesmerizing, but it's an enjoyable watch nonetheless.

Sahara works almost solely because of its pacing. Some creativity here and there helps, but if the film let us think about its absurd plot, we might not enjoy it. But it kept the pressure on, rarely letting up, and I found myself having quite the fun time. It doesn't have great characters, villains, or anything you could put into a successful drama picture, but that's okay because the action scenes are enjoyable enough to keep you entertained. Preposterous? Sure.

It bored me. Plus it's dumb, and it's not funny when it tries to be. To be fair, though, I saw it on TV in pan-and-scan fullscreen, and it was probably also edited for time and content. These factors probably made it even worse than it really is.

I'm a huge fan of Cussler and his novels. I also can understand his frustrations with Hollywood after the disaster that was "Raise The Titanic". I had high hopes that Sahara would be a better adaptation with Cussler having script approval. Turns out they ignored that and while this turns out to be a decent action film, it isn't Sahara the novel. Decent action flick. Casting was at least pretty well on. Let's hope if they do another, they are true to Cussler's vision.

it quite deliberately tries to be something magic, which immediately means that it must fail. i like mcconaughey and zahn and they work really well together. where it fails in its 007/indiana jones ripoff is that it takes too long for it to gain any momentum, and the action is ok but you've forgotten most every scene in the movie as soon as that moment is past.

Another entry in the riddles through time subgenre that's turning out stinkers at a De Laurentiisian pace. The heroes don't even really figure out their puzzle, they just keep stumbling onto answers by throwing dynamite at pursuers or chasing errant soccer balls. Steve Zahn approaches these Hollywood projects one of two ways: either with resigned dismay or a devil-may-care conviction to spitting whatever warped line readings occur to him. Sadly, it's more of the former here.

Based on Clive Cussler's novel, the film is faithful to the book for the most part and the casting also reflects that perfectly. The plot feels pretty weak and the twists that Clive Cussler's novels are known for really don't work in a theatrical movie. The acting isn't bad and neither is the directing but the soundtrack is very flat feeling and lackluster. The effects meh and the flow feels choppy. Still a decent adventure film but most of what makes Clive Cussler's novels great fall flat

I enjoyed Shara. For an action, comedy blockbuster it wasn't offensive. It had some good action mixed with a few moments of comedy from one of my favorite, and in my mind underutilized actors, Steve Zahn. Penelope Cruz didn't really bring much to this movie and Matthew McConaughey is not an action hero in my book - he can do many things, just not action hero. The story was basic but I thought the ending fell a bit flat. In a movie like this the audience wants to see the villain burn.

"High adventure" Indiana Jones-James Bond hybrid has far too much plot, and too many characters, to sustain the light and breezy tone it's going for; McConaughey and Zahn are perfectly cast for a laid back adventure, but the mid-section frantically follows too many plot strands which results in a serious loss of momentum. Kept watchable by the well staged and executed action sequences, including an exciting finale.

Matthew McConaughey & Penelope Cruz were fun to watch. The story was appropriately twisted & had some dark characters. Some really bad, eye rolling scenes, like finding the 150 year old ship & using its cannon, lame exploding boat trick & the doomsday scenario. Except for awful plot choices, the action was mostly good, they sold it well & it has some good tense moments. A bit too far fetched to be good. Great music, production quality, pacing, & enthusiastic acting saves an otherwise awful plot.
