I expected something cheesier. I wasn't convinced at first, but the film is patient and persistent in carving out its niche of chatacter-driven psych-horror. By the end, I was a believer.

A good and promising debut horror. No more, no less. Suitably creepy, Clark is very good, and Glass is one to watch, but I don’t think this particular movie really deserves the accolades it’s receiving.

There are a lot of these slow burn horrors that are quite effective. And then there's Maud. And then there's Maud.

Less of a horror and more of a new modernist filmmaker taking Paul Schrader’s themes a la Taxi Driver to their most logical extremes: God’s Angry (wo)Man. Direction, score, and performances are all as tight as the runtime. Calls attention to the unnerving overlap between piety and mania; like the best religious terror, this finds that place where self-loathing becomes self-centeredness - like we’re somehow special because we’re Called to suffer. Trust: Nothing’s special in that.

A tight little psychological drama with flashes of horror that feels very grounded in reality. A very promising debut from Glass, and some really nice work from Clark and Ehle. As character pieces go, the backstory isn't really fleshed out; instead, Maud's past is merely hinted at, and I think this adds to the sense of dread pervading the film. Taken as a whole, it is probably more straightforward than the individual scenes might suggest. A solid and likeable effort.

TIFF 19: Saint Maud leaves a lot of black space by the time it is finished; both in feeling and in unresolved narrative. Despite this coldness, Rose Glass shows some serious sleight of hand in her ability to explode on the off-beat. This film feels rough around the edges, but shows the promise of a bright young director finding her rhythm.

I really dug this. It is predictable but the sense of dread is well done. Clark is great, and she is helped along with some very effective sound design that knows when to cut to silence. A terrifying look at mental illness.

An...incredibly...slow...80...minutes. Almost worth it for that last shot. It is nice to watch a film much like the Apartment Trilogy, but without the feelings of guilt from supporting a terrible person.

A polished remix of Red Dragon, Red State, Devil All the Time, and a medley of other "religious horror" flicks. It doesn't do anything particularly new or interesting, but it travels the paths well-trod by other older movies quite well. Watch only if you want something solid from the subgenre, otherwise you ain't missing much by skipping it. It's just a generally unpleasant experience often bordering on religious torture porn without any insight or revelation to make the gruesomeness worth it.

Very promising debut director and a new face Morfydd Clark in modern horror story of a pious nurse. Stunning cinematography and score nailed the entirety. Director/writer left nicely part of the story out of the frame.

If you look for creeping horror or the new 'Rosemary's Baby', this is not what you think. It's more of a religious drama with occasional thrills, and that's fine. A few missteps from debutant Glass, but Clark is stunning in the lead.

An empty death metal stunt. Since the insanity and trajectory of Maud are sketched from the first moment, all that we are waiting for is the extent, no strike that, we also know what she will do. Really, are people impressed that Rose Glass knows how to point a camera at people and have her post-production company distort faces into satanic visages? I found nothing about this film human, touching, relatable, scary, beautiful, interesting, or entertaining. But bring on the speed metal drums!

Queasy, grimy horror film would have been better fleshed out a little more in terms of the nature of "Maud" – the extraordinary final scene almost clears the issue, but it feels more like a sick joke at Maud's expense than a resolution. Beautifully performed (Clark and Ehle are equally formidable) and film captures Maud's cock eyed view of the world with an uncomfortable vividness. Weighed down somewhat by a sense of predictability, as the story arc is clear from the start.

Clark was wonderful and diverse, able to handle a complicated character. But I was a little let down by this. For whatever reason it just didn't connect with me even though I appreciate a bunch of it. I never really felt the dread/horror that I would have liked. The directing was solid but Glass didn't exactly showcase being a master of her craft (some good shots though). Ending is awesome. Excellent contrast--angelic moment ended abruptly with a horror that the rest of the film lacked.

The narrative has no plot holes or anything that strains belief, but it actually goes too far in the other direction: There are no surprises to be had, no moment when all the pieces coalesce together, no pay-off. You can see what's coming 3 minutes in, and then it comes. I don't understand why this is being treated as the second coming of Christ; is Maud writing all these reviews? There is no suspense and certainly no horror here, except maybe in the realization of what Hollywood has become.

It is slow-paced, with the horror creeping in slowly in form of mental illness, loneliness and a city that is filled with people and yet empty at the same time. While it's not all consistent in its mood, the horror elements ramp up towards the end and while the very ending seems to divide people's opinions a lot, I really loved the final scene.

Imagine a magician performing a magic trick while simultaneously showing you how the trick works, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what watching Saint Maud feels like. Glass doesn’t seem to have much trust in her audience, making it clear from the get go what her film is about while failing miserably in concealing it through gimmicky visual bullshit. She said her film didn’t receive a proper release last year because of COVID and I honestly believe God had something to do with it.

There's an irony to this movie being delayed by COVID, making it a movie people watch alone in front of their devices rather than the communal experience a good horror movie can be - which fits the excellent ending. I love how confined it is, matching the loneliness of the lead character, desperately wanting a purpose but feeling the world get so small.

Nothing about this is scary, and the elements that supposedly contribute to the "horror" are largely rooted in misguided religiousness. I can't really feel anything but anger at Maud's infuriating piety, and while that certainly made the ending a little cathartic, it didn't justify the unpleasant journey there.

This film is locked quite solidly into Clark's perspective, and she turns in a really marvelous performance. It's revealed with real intensity who she used to be and what really broke her, and the madness and intensity of her new self becomes quite frightening. You know that none of this is going to turn out well, but you also cannot predict where it's going. A really remarkable first film.

I already knew where this was going despite its promising start -- a body horror of the soul? --, but then is just unfolds the expected post-horror massacre -- like Mother! + Swallow + Raw -- with nearly no imagination at all. Finale is embarrassing. I kept thinking what a blast this could've been if directed by someone like Sam Raimi.

An excellent drama before it becomes a hell of a horror in its last ten minutes, with a perfectly suitable distressing climax. I didn't think this took any cheap shots thematically, dealing with the theist vs atheist paradigm through these two women, though this dynamic is made more complicated by the theist forcing her beliefs. It also doesn't seem to dwell too much on one aspect of her life at a time, keeping this admittedly small story (and massive depression) fresh.

I wonder how much more I would have appreciated this had that first scene been omitted entirely. There’s such a subtle approach to the material after that I almost want to think some producer or other outside force pushed that scene in front to sell the horror label this bafflingly displays (in truth, it is most likely just a stumble from a director’s first outing). Succeeds mainly through its excellent main actress and a few stunning images towards the end of this carefully paced mania.

What an incredible and self-assured feature film debut for writer/director Rose Glass. I'm so excited to see where else her career leads. Saint Maud is such a complete and compelling directorial vision that perfectly nails its complex thematic exploration without sacrificing any horror or raw entertainment value. Excellent performance from the lead in a brilliantly assembled film.
