This is the movie that catapulted Topol into fame, was writer Ephraim Kishon's first foray into filmmaking, and ignited Menahem Golan's career as a producer. At first I didn't like it as it started off with a bunch of pretty lame jokes, but it picks up quickly and is wonderfully bittersweet throughout. I really like how Kishon ridicules both the Mizrahi immigrants and the Ashkenazi Kibbutzniks equally and proportionately, never going too far. A funny and touching movie.
