Merely pleasant in the first half and mind-numbingly dreadful in the second. McGregor and Blunt's charismatic performances result in some mildly amusing scenes, but soon the film evolves into an unbelievably corny and artificial sermon about the value of religious faith that pretty much uses every cliché in the book and includes some cringe-worthy salmon-related allegories. The last few scenes are nearly laugh-out-loud hilarious in the sheer power of their stupidity and predictability.

I wish UK filmmakers would stop trying to make films for Americans. This is a sentimental nause-fest populated entirely by ridiculous stereotypes. Not even Blunt and MacGregor, normally good value, can save this.

It's very generic (Concepts of salmon fishing and Yemen are not enough to make it original), but still decently done.

An enjoyable brit-com with strong performances from all. You see the end coming a mile off but it has enough heart and more than enough laughs to keep it going. Solid.

Ewan McGregor's name was Dr. Jones and he got referred to it so many times that I could think about was Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Just like its title, the film Salmon fishing in the Yemen seems to be an improbable endeavour, but becomes more likely with every step along the way. A terrific mix of funny and tragic, this Hallström script is lifted by McGregor's talented performance and Marianelli's wonderful (as always) soundtrack. Many kudos for this lovely picture.

Salmon Fishing in Yemen was as surprisingly interesting as the concept itself. The main group of actors did a wonderful job. McGregor plays a socially inept fisheries expert. Blunt plays a woman who is tasked with getting this project off the ground while dealing with a new love who has gone to fight in Afghanistan. Kristin Scott Thomas plays a cold representative for the Prime Minister. Finally, the sheik is played by Amr Waked who was fantastic as well. I would probably watch this again.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a romance that avoids being romantic, the way a lot of good relationships begin, and this is the film's greatest strength: it takes these two normal people, and even in a most abnormal circumstance together, they continue to behave about as normally as you'd expect in life but not in movies. It's a warm movie, and sweet as heck.

In all honesty, I don't know if I actually finished writing the review. I stopped caring halfway through, like the movie.

It may include some rubbish preaching on faith and religion, but "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" is a highly enjoyable watch. It grasps you from the first moments with its quirky dialogues, the fine performance of McGregor and a mostly effortless mix of drama, comedy and romance, while there's still time for hilarious political satire. The always terrific Kristin Scott Thomas delivers once again and, although the end is rather predictable despite a misleading faux-U turn, one is left satisfied.

Great Setting and Emily Blunt and Obi Wan have great on screen chemistry. Yes, the basic plot unfolds pretty predictable, but the outstanding cinematography and the good dialogue make it worth watching. I actually realy liked this one.

Even though this is by-the-book "Hollywood" filmmaking, SFITY contains an abundance of charm and makes for an overall pleasurable experience.

For a movie with good performances, and an original idea (salmon fishing in the yemen along with some of the other things the movie tries to incorporate like assassination attempts, faith, etc), it somehow ended up being bland. It's not bad. It's not especially good. It's forgettable and would be even worse if it wasn't for the believable chemistry between the two leads. Some of the more out there stuff it attempts just doesn't work.

Such a great movie. It had all the elements for just a lovely story. I thought that Ewan McGregor was awesome in this and so was his co-star Emily Blunt. I thought that Kirstin Scott Thomas was really funny in this. It was great how they were able to make this movie a political satire and a very cute love story about bringing Salmon to the Yemen river. I felt like there were little fun surprises around every corner and it kept my interest very well. Just a thoroughly nice good time.

A renewing concept. I never thought this would work, but due to some solid directing I enjoyed every minute of this (somewhat cliched at times) but touching story about some extraordinary people.

So-so plot, especially towards the end, but E.McGregor is likable and Emily.B is at her most loveable - and that goes to eleven; without her this wouldn't charm me that much. *Preview*: #12#, exp-3*, story, Emily B!/10-5, (director Hallström/1), R5.

My problem with these kinds of movies: how easily the narrator gets everything. Some girl happens to lose her boyfriend, putting her in an emotionally vulnerable state. Our lovable slob just has to show a little sympathy, not be a total ogre, and she falls right into his arms. Also a super rich oil sheik who happens to share his passion for his weird little hobby puts him in charge of a million dollar project. Wish fulfillment fantasy without the discipline to create real drama or conflict.

With a cast like this, it should be better. The chain of events this film leads down could have been wild. I mean, it does everything right. It has a nice sense of humor and its heartwarming enough, but the delivery is so bland. Everything from the conflict to the dialogue feels so contrived, like we're not even watching humans. It ends up falling flat as a whole.

As odd as it sounds, the basic plot wasn't the problem. The idea of bringing salmon to Yemen was much less ridiculous than the romantic subplots.

Is the moral that farmed fish aren't so different from wild fish? McGregor, Blunt & Waked elevate Salmon Fishing in the Yemen from a hokey tale about faith to an airy RomCom & satire surrounding British politics. The budding romance (& bromance) are enjoyable, but the love-triangle with Mison's character is too clichéd. The film is fairly amusing thanks to a brilliant performance from Thomas, but leaves you wanting more of the political elements. Predictable, contrived, but watchable.

An off-beat story and strong cast do nothing to make this manipulative and predictable film enjoyable. Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas do the best that they can with under-written roles. The humour is devoid of laughs, the romance feels cheap and contrived, and the plot twists are completely unbelievable.

Very much predictable and the premise is very doubtful if not outright cynical. Yet, Ewan McGregor, being the brillant actor he is, gives the movie some nice and funny moments. Without him this movie would be highly forgettable.

Hallström shoots three or four plot twists in the last 20 minutes -- jeez, this must be the most uneven climax of recent cinema --, and I guess that might please extremely sentimental viewers and the crazy dudes that nominated this cheesy brit romcom for 3 Golden Globes, but not me. I would definitely change my grade in exchange for Blunt's eternal love, though.

It has the slightly looney story and humor I had hoped for, but is also much more of a drama than expected on top of that. The combination works pretty well, I think.

A decently entertaining movie. The story is good except for may be in my opinion the character of Robert. The performance of Ewan McGregor and Kristin Scott Thomas was good along with Emily Blunt. The end is predictable but over all an enjoyable film.

Once again Emily Blunt is sexy, sweet, smart, vulnerable, sometimes funny and altogether enjoyable. Ewan McGregor was good however his role was somewhat limiting. Music and production quality is very good. And supporting cast was also enjoyable, especially Kristen Scott Thomas. The predictable love story was a bit slow to develop and never got very intense. The writing is a bit weak, but good performances help to elevate it.

One of the strangest straightforward films I've seen: the premise (to make the titular idea a reality) is odd enough, but it also combines romantic comedy, romantic drama, political satire, jokes about Asperger's, terrorism, a foiled assassination out of a Bond film, speeches comparing fishing and religious faith, and a divinely inspired (?) salmon. Yet it works fairly well, with a good cast (Scott Thomas especially), crisp directing, lovely cinematography and music, and a...truly unique script.

The plot gets cheaper and cheesier, but the very charming and great performances of Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt make up for that. Not to say made this average-dialogued movie work. :D As goes for all the acting performances in the movie, actually. It's pretty remarkable how those make you buy even the most obvious, transparent and more than lazily written "turns" of that crap bag of a plot. Oh, and Kristin Scott Thomas - awesome as always.

Nothing extraordinary, but strong - and unusual - for what it is; a cute, unique story, some sharp dialogue, and an ending that's slightly less predictable than you might expect

A good story, with its heart in the right place. It develops a cute bickering style, to caring style relationship between the two mains. However, confusing and unexplored conflict, paired with twists and turns that cause instaneous 180s on the plot, leech the enjoyment from an otherwise great movie.
