Filmed long before his current fame as a horror novelist and filmmaker, Salome/The Forbidden re-releases two experimental films Clive Barker directed in the 1970s. While they're a departure from more familiar fare such as Hellraiser and Lord of Illusions, these films show that Barker's unique narrative sense and startling visual style were already firmly in place. Clearly guided by inexperienced hands, yet still exhibits a great deal of raw talent. Surprisingly, it's also quite engaging, especially for a student film.

Evokes a feeling of getting lost in a seductive yet dangerous satanic world, like in all the best parts of the Bible.

Makes for a great black metal music video. Put on some Carpathian Forest or something and it's a blast.

Can't remember these well, but I was struck mostly by the strong and inventive visual style. Otherwise not much of interest.
