É um documentário com um viés artístico tão vivo que é impossível pensá-lo apenas como um documentário. Inserido no período stalinista, o filme contudo está mais preocupado em retratar a vida e os costumes de um povo cuja isolação pouco toca o mundo soviético do que com propaganda em si (salvo pela crítica religiosa, contestada pelos locais, que a reconhecem fictícia), constituindo a grande riqueza do filme. É bonito e a música composta para o filme em 1997 por Zoran Borisavljevic é maravilhosa.

Salt of Svanetia, directed by Mikheil Kalatozishvili, is an amazing looking piece of work that chronicles the hardness of life in the post-Revolutionary expanses of the USSR. There are images in this film you will never see anywhere else: of birth, of work, and of death -- all presented bluntly, yet with exquisite artistry .
