Pretty much follows the "Intouchables" recipe: lightweight, not-too-melodramatic (although they did overdo it with the slow-motion) 'human interest' stories with social interest. And, mostly, it works: there are scenes that feel in utter communication with reality (stuff like the rooftop scene is awfully humane). And then there are scenes that seem to borrow dramatic and comedic cues from 100 years experience of film contrivance. But in its small moments, "Samba" is definitely to treasure.

I truly enjoyed this film. Omar Sy did a great job, just like all the others. The characters were strong, yet vulnerable, a mix of emotions that made them real people and that made me believe this story. I thought I would have been an overly dramatic film, but I had a few real laughs. This movie has almost everything, except the ending it deserves.

Straight after seeing Intouchables, I sought what else Omar had done. There is nothing outrageously wrong here with fine acting and a few laughs. Nothing you haven't seen before though or anything you'll be remembering the next day.

I wanted to like this movie and I kinda did. But it also left me with some uneasy feelings. The black man and the white woman is a very difficult and dangerous trope and more than once did I feel that maybe an exotizing line was about to be cossed in this movie. Luckily all characters are portrayed as imperfect though to make up for those moments. Finally, the movie could've been more entertaining for a comedy...

To this day I just saw two films with Isaka Sawadogo in it. Both with the same theme. The Invader of Provost is definitely the better one, in every aspect of filmmaking. But that doesn't say I didn't like Samba, on the contrary.
