Awesome ninja action. This flick introduces all the cool ninja conventions that were staples by the time the 80's came along and ninja flicks were being cranked out by the dozen. Reverse jumping, shuriken flurries, rope darts, it's all here and filmed with incredible style. The plot is a little convoluted and deals with samurai politics in the wake of the Battle of Sekigahara, but it doesn't really matter. This flick is more concerned with making ninjas look cool as fuck. Mission accomplished.

Eleven years after first viewing this, I did a complete turnabout. This movie is awesome. Nevermind the flurry of characters and factions. It's not hard to comprehend the bigger picture. What matters is how this film aestheticizes and transposes Cold War intrigue into chanbara with terrific flair. The shadowy cinematography, creatively choreographed action sequences, a characteristically unorthodox Takemitsu score. Espionage, ninjutsu. It's all just so cool.

Samurai, Ninja, Spies and Gratuitous Breast Shots -- what more can anyone ask for from mid-60's chambara? The story is very convoluted and the script very wordy, the direction: interesting. Worth a watch, but not Great.

There's no need to try to understand any of the plot. The plot is not the focus nor the point. Listen to the score, take in the chiaroscuro, and appreciate the hyper-reality of it all.

Early on, I gave up hope of following the plot too closely. In the first 10 minutes, you're pummelled with a dizzying barrage of names, factions, and locations. It doesn't get any better as the movie progresses, and indeed the final scene suddenly introduces a pivotal character out of nowhere who I couldn't recall having heard of before. The photography is wonderful, especially during the stylized action scenes, but sludging through the confusing narrative makes it difficult to enjoy.

Interesting samurai film, a bit choppy but good.

Some very nicely laid up scenes here, but both script and acting falls a bit short at times.

konu, icinde gecen bir ton isim yuzunden bazen kaciyor gibi olsa da toparlanilabiliyor. ihanet, politika, bitmeyen japon ic savaslari uzerine gercekci bir ajan-samuray-ninja filmi. yonetmeninin kamerasi epey stil sahibi. bazi sahneler one cikiyor.

Take notes. Trust me, understanding the machinations of the various power groups will double your enjoyment of this already amazing film.

Boasting striking visuals, Samurai Spy dazzles with vibrant aesthetics and macabre humour but falls flat with a plot that never fully gets going.

Visually i loved it, particularly the use of long shots. I suppose if id seen this during the cold war id appreciate better the absurd twistiness of it and the costant questioning of loyalties...instead of feeling there's an overabundance of twists and deceits without a good enough plot to support them and that the characters sucked. Still, worth a watch for the camerawork.

Strong performances, and intriguing story, well done fights, and gorgeous cinematography. The was a joy to watch even during the slow parts.

As per usual with Shinoda in my experience, his films tend to cohere stylistically very well, and the expert cinematography here is case in point. But with such detached characters, a bunch of details to the plotting that aren't very involving, and the mesmerising sensory impact of the music and camera-work its easy to stop caring about what the hell is going on. But it's a very cool and stylish ninja movie.
