The effects are good, the action is plentiful, and The Rock is big and buff. It's everything you'd expect in a disaster movie with nothing new thrown in. It is a little funny to note that there was a time when a disaster movie involved dozens or hundreds of lives at risk, and the minimum now-a-days is somewhere in the tens of millions.

It not often that a movie comes around that manages so perfectly to be everything i thought it would be, and by "everything" I mean every single disaster movie cliche in the book (with the notable exception of a heroic dog somewhere). Still, it's nice to see a drama about an american middle-class family overcoming their issues and learning wholesome family values by way of all of San Francisco getting obliterated.

The exact same plot from every disaster movie ever. Spoiler alert, every likable character survives, and The Rock reunites with his estranged ex-wife and daughter. If Paul Giamatti and Dwayne Johnson weren't headlining this, it would be completely worthless.

There's no driving force to this earthquake movie, it's just "okay here we go again" and then it's over and the Rock say's we'll rebuild and a tattered and burnt American flag starts to unravel into perfection and I'm dragged out of the theater hooting and hollering. If this didn't have the Rock in it I'd be pissed.

Wow unbelievable at a 9.5 on the Richtor scale. Dwayne Johnson's character saves the day by saving his family because he luckily had a rescue helicopter and no one thought to ask him to stop and rescue anyone else. Lots of people get flattened by slabs of concrete and falling buildings. It's all pretty silly.

Saw this movie about a realm-shattering earthquake and its resulting tsunami on a plane to Japan. AWKWARD... A quick review of the Rock's contract for San Andreas reveals that his bulging biceps must be granted screen time no less than that of all additional cast combined; and while screen time shared by the Rock's beatific smile and his massive muscles is to be allowed, no fewer than seven scenes are to feature the glistening guns and the glistening guns alone.

San Andreas at face value could be mistaken for another Roland Emmerich film. This is very familiar territory and the clichéd ridden plot, script and characters are loosely strung together by a showcase of set pieces. But this is actually better than the likes of '2012' because it's not dragged over a grueling 2 hour run time, it swiftly cuts to the chase and it never takes itself too seriously. Dwayne Johnson is good fun and to be fare there are some enjoyable and impressive set pieces.

Hollywood disaster genre cinema - you've seen one, you've seen them all. Two scenes in the film - one comedic moment where the line was expected but delivered marvelously ("If you're not dead already I'm going to fucking kill you") and one decent tense scene. Alexandra Daddario is pretty much every reason one might have to watch this film - and I don't mind the gratuitous scene however short it was. Kylie Minogue's appearance is brief, but that's a marketing gimmick in anyway so we're cool.

It's a disaster movie. You know what you're fucking getting into. Mr. The Rock saves his marriage, and America, from an evil earthquake, while we see tons and tons of scary footage of things getting destroyed and people dying. It's not a great script, but there's enough Giamatti to keep me happy, and Mr. The Rock is an endless font of charisma.

And that means San Andreas is, while predicated on disastrous violence, really all about family. And heroism for one's family. It's not a new message. However, the family story line has been seen 100 times in every other disaster movie ever made; nearly identical to 2012 But in the end, I paid $14.65 to be entertained by the intense amount of CGI and "The Rocks" hot daughter!

It's frustrating and generic as hell but I can't say I wasn't entertained throughout. It never tries to be good either which is a major fault with a lot of these movies. After tragedy strikes, a traumatised father allows his family to be torn asunder, but fortunately the certainty of mass destruction on a vast scale provides an opportunity for him to once again assert his fitness to lead the women of the kinship unit. Thus begins the process of rebuilding relationships. Got a little worried at the start by the horrible CGI of the car flipping off a cliff, but it turned out to be the only terrible effect in the movie (weird, because that's one of the few that could have been done practically.) Fun movie that hits all the usual disaster movie cliches. Doesn't break any new ground, but it's entertaining. Dwayne Johnson is great as usual in this type of role, and I really enjoyed Alexandra Daddario & the two British brothers (good chemistry between those three.)

I got more out of San Andreas than expected. Yes, it was a little silly at times, very CGI driven, and a pretty pointless movie. But that's the point: it's a "turn your brain off" film, and a pretty well-made one at that. Dwayne Johnson shows off his action star chops well, while Paul Giamatti does pretty decently too as a seismologist. The massive destruction we see is also well done with some unexpected restraint. No, San Andreas isn't great, but it's not bad for killing time.

Some good computer graphics. Carla Gugino is always a treat, and Dwayne Johnson was satisfying. Alexandra Daddario was cute and bouncy. As expected, mostly excellent FX, mostly crappy plot and dialogue. The underwater stuff at the end was....under the top. Sorry, there's just no way I can take Duane "The Rock" Johnson seriously. There was one fill-in-the-blank funny at the end. They're surveying the destruction and she looks at him and says, "What are we gonna do now?" The Rock is on top form and has produced a film that may shake up the disaster movie genre - why does it always have to be about the end of the world? Specific locations can be in trouble too! I have a lot of respect for disaster films (more than other certain blockbuster genres), but I continue to be disappointed by how ridiculously safe and archetypal they are. There's not much to enjoy in plot progression here, as you can see scenes coming from a mile away (and sometimes predict the dialogue word for word), but in the film's defense, it's a straight-up disaster film with a healthy dose of destructive goodiness and people having their shit totally ruined.
