Feels like RKO attempting a Warner Bros crime programmer. Action packed, for sure. Tries to promote prison reform, giving prisoners a chance to educate themselves for a more hopeful future, but naturally some take advantage of that trust. That's when it gets ruthless as Barton MacLane goes on the run. The story is a little all over the place, and easily the weak point of San Quentin (1946), but as a straight forward good guys vs bad guys B-movie it does manage give entertainment worth.
