The minor forgivable flaws of the first one are magnified in this one, with Kurosawa's direction not able to smooth over the dreary, scattered plot. The propaganda element is also much more noticeable and obnoxious. Even the fight scenes are boring.

Sanshiro Sugata is back! He's better than ever! Well, in his abilities. Not so much the quality of the movie. Sumumu Fujita's performance in this sequel does not live up to his performance in the first. The plot itself is much weaker and the characters motivations feel more extrinsic than intrinsic. That wouldn't be a problem if the intrinsic motivation in the first film wasn't one of the most well-executed driving forces of the entire plot.

The opening scene could be the worst fight ever filmed - at least it lets you know right away what you're in for.

Easily my least favorite Kurosawa film. It almost seems like he's poking fun at the material by including uncharacteristically zany scenes near the beginning and fight scenes that lack drama throughout. There are a few interesting compositions, as we can occasionally see his penchant for balance in his mise en scene. However, the film is a misstep in an otherwise magnificent career.

The story seemed a bit more nuanced than the first, and I really liked the ending. Fantastic sense of composition, as usual. I do think it's a bit hypocritical to hold up this ideal of "we don't fight for entertainment" in a movie which displays fighting, for entertainment purposes. Also I have to say that this fanatical alignment with a particular martial arts branch & style is one of those cultural oddities that I understand, but always found rather silly.

More meditative, less playful but it's a solid sequel. Probably won't revisit it though, that last "duel" was unfortunately too unintentially comical.

The concept of Japan vs America (or the world) in mixed fighting styles was something which became a major part of Japanese culture later on. So the concept was something that truly interesting to the public eye. Unfortunately Akira Kurosawa wasn't too keen on making a sequel to his first hit, Sugata Sanshirô (1943), and it shows with the result. Not nearly as detailed as the first one and honestly the story layout was weak too, reeking as a cash-in forced on by the studio.

Completely disappointing. You can almost feel the oppressive weight of the war, the studio, & the government coloring the mood of everyone involved in this production. Made in just a few months with Kurosawa forced to include anti-American propaganda, everything feels half-hearted (aside from the shot composition, which Kurosawa will always nail). Most actors other than the Higaki bros seem unengaged and there's barely a story. It is, for lack of a better word, boring. Could be Kurosawa's worst.
