This sensuously beautiful film chronicles the activities of four sisters who gather in Kyoto every year to view the cherry blossoms. It paints a vivid portrait of the pre-war lifestyle of the wealthy Makioka family from Osaka, and draws a parallel between their activities and the seasonal variations in Japan. (imdb)

A film that tells the story of the clash between modern Western and traditional Japanese cultures. "The Makioka Sisters" is about four sisters and their struggle to marry the third sister. Each sister plays a special role in the family, not only literally but symbolically: the eldest symbolizing traditional Japan, the 2nd eldest being the mediator between the eldest and the rest of the family, the 3rd symbolizing demure Japanese femininity, and the youngest symbolizing rebellion against society.

Ichikawa's imagery is beautiful, especially in capturing those gorgeous landscapes. And the characters are strong, each sister having a distinct, fleshed-out and compelling personality, backed up by some fine performances. But it's a hard movie to get excited about. The story has a few touching moments and intriguing conflicts, but in general it's somewhat bland drama that takes longer to play out than it should. It's awfully mellow for Ichikawa, pretty to look at but lacking in flair.

Arranged marriage is a serious business in this almost two-and-a-half long Japanese epic costume family drama, based on the Jun'ichirô Tanizaki's novel and directed by Kon Ichikawa. The cinematography is beautiful; those slow, lingering colorful nature shots are poetic and soothing. The story is fittingly slow, elegant and nuanced. I'm sure I missed a lot of this film without any real cultural sensitivity. Pleasant, but not very entertaining.

A full-fledged exercise in the sensuality of genetic similarity and different shades of family sensibility.
