A somewhat enjoyable and clever version of The Maltese Falcon. Instead of adapting it into one the hard-boiled films that Huston and Ruth produced, Dieterle decided to make it into a light comedy, changing names and appropriate details for comedic effect (for example, the Gutman character becomes a woman with a fat spoiled nephew, and "Cairo" comes back to apologize for destroying "Spade's" room) and changing hard-boiled dialogue into humorous repartee. It's a reasonably funny noir send-up.

Gonzo version of THE MALTESE FALCON plays fast and loose with the book in some ways and stays faithful in others. Rather entertaining, if completely misguided.

The comedy version of The Maltese Falcon! And it's the farce approach which makes this version a little gem of a movie! Here they go off in 'free spirit' mode with gags, snappy lines and pure energy! Warren William was awesome here! He was in such a playful mood one couldn't help but continually laugh at his antics! And what about Bette Davis! She rules as the femme fatale. A equal match to William's lively wisecracking ways! Rest of the crooks was funny too! A hilarious detective story parody!

This movie is really silly and stupid but I had a smile on my face throughout most of the movie. The film tries to be like the Thin Man but fails because the story and performances were as good. This is a fun movie and has a brisk pace, it was also fun to see Bette Davis in a different role than I was used to.

Davis called this the worst movie she ever made (I think Golden Arrow is worse because it's not nearly as entertaining). Clearly written as a genre parody--from the corny jokes ("You know I wouldn't let a little thing like killing Ames make me late for a date with you!") to a secretary so dumb she has to stop and think how to spell her own name--if there was a right tone for this material, no one but Alison Skipworth found it. Warren William is awful, and Davis barely survives.
