Satan's Blood

I had to check the cast four times before I came to peace with the fact that Paul Naschy isn't in this. Sets up a series of obstacles for a couple to navigate through on their way out of a black mass mansion. I enjoyed the setup and then watched them throw all good will away in order to show some skin. So, basically they got the good will back from me. Not great (probably not even good) but perfect to play in the background in October (sans kids, of course).

An enjoyable slice of sleazy Spanish satanic shenanigans with a Rosemary's Baby vibe. Mariana Karr proves to be a useful Jenny Agutter-alike, and the rest of the cast do well with the slightly odd material. There's a bit of gore, some fairly creepy moments, and it does feel quite well made. There's also plenty of gratuitous nudity if that floats your boat. It drags a bit in places, and veers towards being confusing in others, but it gets its shit together by the end. Sort of. Worth a look.

Best part is how the couple just refuses to ever discuss the satanic orgy they accidentally got roped into while acting all hot and bothered about the dead dog and possible murders they’re eventually implicated in. The film could be a truist indictment of Franco’s Spain, or a Vacation Bible School PSA about the dangers of satan without, ahem, beating around the bush.

It's interesting to see how excited filmmakers were to throw in excessive sex and violence after the fall of Franco. This isn't very good, though - it borrows elements from Rosemary's baby, but puts them into a silly and confusing mystery story about devil worship that seems to be a pretext to show more sex.

Curioso ver esse filme agora que estou embrenhada em Nossa parte da Noite da Mariana Enriquez, ambos têm uma ligação com as ditaduras de seus respectivos países, aparentemente uma regra do horror espanhol em tempos de Franco era que se passasse em outros lugares. Escalofrio é da leva pós ditadura que não apenas se passa na Espanha, como trata de satanismo hardcore. Box Versátil Obras-primas do Terror volume 14.

Worth A Watch

I basically thought this film was an hour of dumb, nonsensical behavior and portentous dialogue. There's not enough nudity in the world to justify sitting through this. I must admit that this film ends with a really nifty twist, but one that really makes the whole film inexplicable. I think the film wants me to believe that their dog was in cahoots with the Satanists.
