John Travolta stars as a local disco kingpin at the peak of his popularity. Once a week, after six full days of work in a Brooklyn paint store, Tony (Travolta) douses himself with Brut cologne, dons a floral bodyshirt, gabardine pants and platform shoes - and ritualistically prepares himself for "Saturday Night Fever." Through the influence of Stephanie - his more sophisticated dance partner - and Tony's brother - a disillusioned priest - Tony begins to question the way his views life and the narrowness of his perspective. What easily could have been a one-note cash-in on the disco phenomenon actually serves as something like a "Rocky" for douchebags, which I actually mean as a compliment. Like many of the great films of the decade, you'd be hard-pressed to call John Travolta's Tony sympathetic, but damn it if there's not just enough shading and depth to make you hope that he can break free from his dead-end, working class existence and numskull buddies. And some of those Bee Gees tunes are great. Yup, I said it.

Disco is a bad joke now, and it's hard to take Saturday Night Fever completely seriously after endless parodying, but all in all, despite its numerous flaws (underdeveloped subplots, throwaway characters like Tony's brother and Annette), Saturday Night Fever is pretty damn good, to be honest. It's easy enough to sympathize with Tony; who's never been an aimless teenager with douchebag friends?

"Life's going nowhere, somebody help me, I'm staying alive" - bleak has never sounded so cool. Travolta's constant attempts to navigate a romance that only manages any real connection on a dance floor for the duration of "More Than A Woman" encapsulates all the futility and excitement of living for the moment, the fever of fleeting passion. The unwanted pregnancy and suicide encapsulate the consequences. You cannot fuck the future. The future fucks you.

I can't properly rate this. Look, I understand that on one hand, there's an examination of class and privilege in this film. HOWEVER, it's hard to look past the aggressive misogyny that all the male characters have, and the two rapes at the end of the film. Sure, this is a world that Tony tries to escape at the end, but it is hard to look past the ugliness of the previous two hours. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT THE FILM I WAS EXPECTING!!!

I found myself very impressed with the handling of Tony Manero's transformation at the dance contest. The famously-dated disco backdrop doesn't hurt this film as badly as you'd think, especially since the passage of time has made that more humorous than anything. No, this film has other things that hurt it worse: its excessive length and unnecessary sequences, its back-loading of all its content, and worst of all, its callous attitude toward racism, homophobia, and especially rape.

Memorable flick with a killer soundtrack and charismatic leads. Now, I have to disagree that the movie trivializes rape. I think it gives a pretty authentic depiction of reality, and the circumstances that can drive a misguided, troubled man to commit the heinous act. It really is unnecessary for the film to feel the need to drive home some overtly obvious message that rape is wrong. I respect that it just keeps it real and depicts "what was" instead of "what should've been."

Saturday Night Fever is a film I showed an interest in watching as a kid because I had just been introduced to Grease and I thought John Travolta was the coolest person ever. But I soon realised that this is a very different film. John Travolta is perfect for the role, the dancing sequences are all thoroughly enjoyable and the Bee Gees soundtrack in particular is timeless. And nobody since has ever made walking down the street carrying a tin of paint look cooler than Travolta does.

A film that's both as good as and slightly more complex than its reputation suggests. Saturday Night Fever both paints a vivid picture of the disco scene, and gets us to connect with a protagonist who, underneath the required macho posturing, is more sensitive than he's allowed to let on.

So emblematic of its era that it might as well have popped out of the sky from the collective unconsciousness. There's a lot of Scorsese in here; anachronistically so, considering Raging Bull would come out three years later. Lots of characterization for a relatively unlikable protagonist, tinged by feelings of Catholic guilt. I think the reputation of this film was diluted by the awful PG version, which is a shame. It's looked at as Proto-Grease rather than Mean Disco Streets. Fantastic.

I like the way that the film uses disco dancing as Tony's means of filling in the emptiness of the rest of his life--his role as a creative individual on the dance floor gave him some outlet to connect with something beyond his limited and painful experience. That said, the movie often feels like two separate films--the dance floor, and everything else. The tonal shifts between these two realms are completely jarring, particularly in some of the more extreme scenes (rape, bridge).

The quintessential movie of the 70's; on the shell, a dance movie but the layers come off early as a movie of the hardships of finding your place in life and the trial of growing up and entering adulthood. With strong characters and star performances from Travolta and Gorney, this movie managed to move me much more than I expected because I could relate to it. The dialogue does get a tad bit corny at points but that can easily be overseen; plus, the Bee Gees wrote a killer soundtrack. Bravo.

How much more 70s could this movie be?! The answer is none - none more 70s. It's the ultimate time capsule of that decade in America, and fascinating in that sense alone. The soundtrack is groovin', and young Travolta just oozes charisma. I mean, it's definitely kind of cheesy though, and for a movie that isn't THAT old its very casual "eh, no big deal" attitude towards rape is SUPER uncomfortable. But overall I found it a pretty involving and interesting experience.

Couldn't have been more 70s if it had been trying. Its almost as if you've got an unintentional time capsule for the period. Disco, sexism, racism, gang violence, drugs, the fashion, the style... it's all there. And yet its also a huge deconstruction of the era, showing the violent, shallow, lead-less existence of a world of drugs, sex, and rock-n-roll.

Not without its issues (Like a horrendous ending), but something about this movie is just plain enjoyable. It's a gritty, streetwise classic with a disco sheen as a backdrop. The theme of the story itself is one I can relate to and Travolta is awesome. And yes, the songs are great. "How Deep Is Your Love" is one of the best pop songs of the 70's guys! Credit to Travolta for a stand out performance but his character and the film as a whole are unappealing and underdeveloped. The character arc is pretty predictable from about 5 minutes in and everything in the film seems to serve only to further that arc. Plot points are picked up and dropped at a whim as are ideas that could lend the film meaning. Decent enough to watch but that's about it.

The basic concept is one I like: finding a temporary relief from an otherwise discontent life. Disco isn't my thing though, and I imagine it's kind of hard to connect to unless you lived through that particular era. The script is pretty dumb and often too obvious, and I'm not diggin' John Travolta. It tries to be tough by including things like rape, suicide, and racial violence but by the end all of these are just throwaway elements, and the conclusion is rather unsatisfying.

What a weird ending: Travolta literally walks away from a combination gang rape and suicide in order to form a platonic "friendship" with some dull golddigger. Beautiful Donna Pescow is abused and wasted here; Karen Gorney is wet cardboard. But Travolta's a sneering, benignly depraved, likeable creation who knows his limits as a man but still can't reign in that weird hot bod. And the soundtrack! "Saturday Night Fever" excels in weaving music into its narrative fabric, making it an undeniable star from the get-go—as displayed by John Travolta's iconic strut with a paint can, all the way to the dance contest scenes. While the film offers a compelling look into its era, it doesn't shy away from problematic elements, particularly in its portrayal of women. This aspect, unfortunately, serves as a stark reminder of prevailing attitudes from the late seventies. Despite these complexities, the

Tony is a very interesting character played well by Travolta, though I found him perhaps a bit too unsympathetic to really connect fully with the movie; he's a pretty loathsome guy. The opening, terrific on its own, into the three successive interactions with Tony turning on the genuinely charming charm, right back into "I'm goin' nowhere" as he heads home. Pop perfection. And more effectively than most today it shows the tragedy of women debasing themselves for male attention, and how those who refuse to, or try to set their own terms for it, might be brutalized all the same, saved only by the extent of that will.

It's strange how the film's goofy and lighthearted reputation is nothing like the movie itself, with its unrelenting tone, repulsive characters, and dark commentary on the sacrifices and alienation of urban living. The dance scenes are singular, but the movie is really brought together as a study of a conflicted character navigating adulthood, sexuality, and masculinity in an urban environment and... not doing well. The redemptive ending is pretty awful though.

As disco is widely considered a joke now, it is sometimes difficult to take Saturday Night Fever completely seriously. Still, the film rises above the one note that many dance films stop at, which gives it praise. The dichotomy between the club and the street is well done, even if it does go from racist/misogynistic to rapey pretty quickly. It is easy to laugh and have a good time with the dancing, but much of the other subject matter does not age well.

A couple sequences feature this gliding camera that seems to sway with the performers in a way that just completely swept me up. The rest of the film is all right, but feels incomplete.
