Feels scripted, like a boring play, and tries to impress by having 'casual conversation' and especially many scream-off's (two characters drive eachother up screaming in a mutual crescendo ending in a scream climax). The comedy and monologues feel dated, not universal

A bleak microcosm of American moral decay. The film's "things ain't what they used to be" message is rather simplistic, and you really get smacked over the head with it. However, Jack Lemmon's performance is very good, and should be of interest to anyone who liked his work in Glengarry Glen Ross. Also noteworthy is Jack "hey, it's THAT guy" Gilford as Lemmon's associate and conscience.

An interesting character study of a man who is pulled in different directions by his need to be ruthless to make it in America and the past experiences as a soldier. Lemmon's been great in a bunch of movies but this is the performance that won him an Oscar.

nice performance from Lemmon in a tale of a business going tits up and what the main protagonist will do to keep the show on the road. There's a big morality lesson in there and a whole heap of 'whatever happened to America'

A dress manufacturer (Jack Lemmon) waxes nostalgic about baseball, music, and the like, while contemplating arson as the solution to his financial woes. It's one of those thematic dramas that tend to push their points a little too heavily, but Lemmon (who won an Oscar) sells it from first minute to last: the scene were he breaks down during a public speech is made all the more painful by Lemmon's restraint. John G. Avildsen's direction and James Crabe's cinematography are unshowily effective.

The exhilaration to be had at this movie comes from the way the performers and John G. Avildsen distill a sequence of scenes that are human and temperamental. We have spent the day with Harry, and owing to Lemmon's performance, he won't be consigned to oblivion.
