If you ever see one WWII film, this should be it. Nothing comes close to defining the horror, chaos and soul-destroying emotions of war. Spielberg has provided a intensely brutal realistic outlook, gripping plotline and fantastic production values. This coupled with consistently stunning acting from everyone involved (yes, even Vin Diesel) brings all the varied personalities of the characters to life, making you genuinely care and feel the emotional weight when individuals are lost. Awesome.

I don't know why Spielberg thought people would enjoy seing forward flashes to an old man in a war movie of this caliber, but hey I'll go with it, after all this movie revolutionized the war movie. It's gritty and real, it's compassionate and well written, and it is the best war movie ever made, I just wish it could have about as many sequels as the Friday the Thirteenth movies have.

This is what an action war movie should be. First five mintues of viewing and you will know what you are in for. Don't get me wrong, sure there is killings, but that's not what makes this a great film. The story, the actors, the realism, all that along with some terrific action scenes make Saving Private Ryan the masterpiece it is.

While the idea behind the film of sending a squadron of men to save one is definitely not realistic once you get past that this film is easily one of the most realistic war movies ever filmed. The opening D-Day invasion sequence is unforgettable and beautifully horrifying. Great performances from all involved from Tom Hanks to Matt Damon to Vin Diesel.

The opening scene is quite amazing. Ofcourse, it's sort of pornography, or war-nography if you will. The rest of the action scenes are a lesser degree of eye-candy, but more importantly, the textual content of the movie is humdrum Hollywood tripe and quite forgettable.

The plot of this movie is a platoon of men being sent off to find Matt Damon for no good reason. He's doing just fine, but due to the rescue mission everyone sent to find him is killed, burdening him with misery for the rest of his life, to the point that fifty years later he cries at the tombstone, having been devastated with survival guilt for the rest of his life as the result of an utterly meaningless "rescue" mission. The ultimate guy film!

This epic film of a platoon of soldiers going on a mission to try and save one man's life set in the time of World War Two really makes the viewer appreciate those who fought for our lives in this great war. The reluctance of the platoon is well known and the dangers of mission is made clear by the lost lives of two men along the way. The realistically gory battle scenes in the film put the viewer right in the middle of the war and leave him/her begging for more. This film is a must see!

Tedious hokum from the master confectioner: no message beyond "Sacrifice!" Such effort expended in the name of verisimilitude, yet so unreal in scene after scene (not to mention the premise). Largely consists of scenes of shooting interspersed with scenes of soldiers discussing their mothers. Watching this for the first time in 2011, it occurred to me to wonder if this movie was the origin of the ongoing fad for shaky camerawork. If so, it is just one more to add to the list of Spielberg's sins.

Fantastic film in many ways yet there's something I still can't quite put my finger on which stops me from including it in my top bracket. Perhaps its the slightly thin story, perhaps the length, perhaps the fact we never really care whether they save Ryan or not. I don't know. The combat scenes alone are enough to offset most quibbles mind, the D-Day landing in particular being possibly the most spectacular opening scene in cinema history. Band of Brothers honed everything here to perfection.

Impressive war film, one of Spielberg's finest achievements. This is the type of movie that Americans should watch on the 4th of July or Veteran's Day. The action is gritty and the realism of the battles is unmatched - so much has been said of the scene on the beach, and for good reason. It's definitely a souped-up tribute to the troops, but it's not a pro-war film by any means. We are shown the soul-crushing reality of war first-hand. Led to 'Band of Bros.' and other emotional war dramas.

The main flaw is that this contains all the heavy handed emotional spielberg-isms as his other films. On the other hand he manages to restrain himself just enough to bring you some of the best recreated WW2 battle scenes ever. It's pretty relentless and the fruitless mission of the Rangers draws you into their bleak world from the start. This is Spielberg's best film so far and his stylistic choice of giving everything a washed out news reel footage look was a fantastic touch.

The first 30 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" are unforgettable -perhaps the most amazing sequence Spielberg has ever put on celluloid. However, apart from that, the rest of the film is just a boring, conventional and moralistic war film that, despite excellent production values and the best efforts of Hanks, is wasted on cardboard characters and an idiotic plot. And its noble stabs at an anti-war stance are ultimately diluted by the bloated patriotic propaganda.

Saving Private Ryan tells a simple story well, while also providing us with a ton of action meaning that we never get bored. Despite taking almost three hours, this is a film that is never boring. The characters grow on you -- at least, the characters you can discern and remember do. This isn't a film that glorifies war. I wish the ending had been better constructed, but you'll be unlikely to care while you're watching it because of how invested you are by that point. A highly recommended film.

The first time I watched this, I thought the D-Day scene was excellent and everything else was pap. After rewatching 13 years later, I think I was a bit too dismissive of the film; there are some impressive segments scattered throughout. It also seems to permit a slightly more ambiguous, less jingoistic interpretation - if you want to find one - than I had remembered. Unfortunately, I think the movie as a whole makes it clear that any ambiguity is unintended; if anything it mocks the very idea.

SPR is less about finding Ryan, and more about how completely different men come together to accomplish a goal. Their lives are explained through stories, and nearly every scene gives us a new story. The movie is loaded with patriotic and schmaltzy bits, some earned, some not. But I'll give Spielberg credit, he made a very entertaining war movie. It's very watchable, even riveting. These characters, as clichéd or one-dimensional as they may be, are likeable and have a good rapport. The film is a series of somewhat unrelated anecdotes, and each one has some kind of resonance... particularly the much-lauded Omaha Beach opening, a technically masterful display of the confusion and chaos of war.

This movie got robbed at the Oscars when they gave best picture to "Shakespeare in Love" (a good film but, come on, not on this level). Spielberg has made some amazing films and this is right up there at the top of that list. The Normandy invasion sequence alone deserved on Oscar. Not only is the opening sequence visually stunning but on a decent sound system, it is simply outstanding cinema. However, this scene cannot really make up for a rather thin story that is stretched to breaking point over the course of 3 hours. Spielberg again turns the smaltz-factor up to 11 ( Hanks dies beautifully, everyone else blown to bits ) and whilst the overall effect is a true cinematic experience, you just wish you didnt leave the cinema feeling manipulated and a bit anti-climactic

Yes, the 20-minute opening war sequence was as close to being there as you can get. However, after that the movie goes steadily downhill. The acting is good, but not great. The story is a bit plodding. But worst of all it's just not that plausible. (Yes, it was based on the Niland brothers, but very loosely.) The implausibility of risking so many men to get one out undercuts all the other efforts Spielberg went to for authenticity.

Saving Private Ryan is a good but pointless film. The framing device of Ryan having been "a good man" is vague & underdeveloped. The action sequences are the film's strongest aspect, encapsulating a convincing sense of claustrophobia, chaos & confusion. There's a single scene with the soldiers sitting & talking that manages to inject a bit of personality, but the rest is filler & war crimes. If the thematic point was the futility of war then the film succeeds, if it was heroism then less so.

Saving Private Ryan is not some kind of grand statement on American duty and service like its prologue and epilogue seem to think. However, it is a fantastic statement on the dehumanization that that occurs during war, both with regards to oneself and one's enemies. Hence, the battle scenes are fantastically compelling and drive the movie forward while any scene that focuses on the characters themselves flounders. The exception that proves the rule is the translator character.
