I think I finally get it: the "Saw" movies are cinematic meth. The camerawork and editing is jittery and paranoid. They broker in excitable themes that probably seemed profound at their conception but in the harsh light of day are actually quite mundane. The set design, lighting, and color all leave the taste of Clorox in your mouth. And they are very, very bad for you. Sitting through five sequels of a shitty nu-horror franchise isn't normal... but on "Saw" it is.

I think people would be inclined to rank this higher had it not been for the horrible franchise it spawned. I still like it though.

Better than I had expected, with some tense and unnerving scenes. But honestly some of the character decisions are so stupid and unbelievable that it becomes irritatingly obvious that the film just wants to find reasons to keep the torture going without bothering with the context.

Great visuals and horror movie atmosphere but some of the acting is pretty bad and the twist is very unimpressive.

Has anyone actually seen such bad acting in such a big hollywood movie ?? Cary Elwes was terrible as was the twist at the end. Of course no one saw it comming, but I think they put the twist at the end to disguise what a bad movie this really is. The scenario was so terrible, characters miraculously remebering what happened to them (BAM !!, another flashback)... This is just violence for no reason, there is no underlying theme, .... a bad B-film sold as a big budget production.

One of the best trailers and ad campaigns in recent years, which amounted to terribly-acted-serial-killer-twist-ending-movie #83. To call it a disappointment is to be much too forgiving to this kind of trash.

I was expecting the torture porn that this series' reputation is built upon, but this ended up being a psychological thriller and a good one at that. Seeing the two leads piece things together and trying to outsmart the serial killer is pretty entertaining and they deliver the performances well enough. Parts of this reminded me of Se7en, which isn't a bad thing. You can definitely feel the small budget at times, and one has to wonder if these men really deserve this. Still, this is great.

I think this original one is a tight, clever thriller. I have since fallen in love with the style that James Wan brings to each of his films. The only thing missing was what should have been Cary Elwes last line, "As you wish."

The acting in this leaves a lot to be inspired, especially from the two leads. The movie makes it for it with a fantastic atmosphere and slow unraveling of it's intricate plot. There are some legitimately tense moments in this movie and the twist is clever. My dislike of most of the Saw franchise does not keep this movie from being creative and well made.

Hilarious melange of genre cliches - ooh, scary. I was too busy laughing at the script. The sequel is actually better (but still al waste of time).

Horribly acted horror film with no scares, an incredibly predictable ending, and production values of a TV movie. Writers and director seemed to think this was a very smat film...it's SE7EN for mentally challenged pre-teens.

This movie is absolutely atrocious until the last 5 minutes. I'll admit, it's one of the few twist endings that I didn't see coming. It's too bad the rest of the movie is absolute trash.

Despite it's nu-metal aesthetic, it's serious tone becomes incredibly goofy. The twists are fun, even if the film feels like Se7en T2o.

At first I thought it was awesome, but the story falls apart when you actually begin to think about it. And the acting was horrible.

A secondhand Se7en, meaning: the concept itself is solid, but nothing else is. There is some ridiculously bad dialogue (which leads naturally to bad acting) and stupid undercranking (which leads naturally to bad editing). The more the story "unravels", the less it makes sense, the less scary it is and the less you care.

A movie that seems to think it's much deeper than it actually has any hope of actually being. The camera and editing trick wear out their welcome long before the story descends into absolute nonsense. I really hate this movie.

Saw was pretty much what I expected from it: a pretty boring "horror" film about some people stuck in chains that wasn't really scary at all, had a plot that made little to no sense, featured annoying music, and mediocre acting at best. In short, Saw was another one of those brainless gory movies that I'll have forgotten about next week.

It promised to be the next great serial killer thriller since se7en. That it was definitely NOT. What it was was a unique take on the horror killer genre with nice mind games and a satisfying twist at the end. Unfortunately it spawned a series of gore-porn sequels that will never amount to what the first film did.

I love the concept behind Jigsaw, but my taste for this series lives and dies with him. I have no care to see anything outside of what little character development is given towards him, and the pointless gore and "clever" traps grow tiresome very quickly.

Got some nice ideas, but deserved a better director. By the way, what is this poor and silly editing doing here? 2021 REWATCH: hasn't aged well -- freaky, 90s MTV-esque montages lol. Although influential as torture porn horror, pretty by the numbers procedural thriller - vibe is totally post-Seven-ish, heavily relying on rotten, dirty interiors and unlikable characters - whose main attraction is the horror that never actually happens and lazy backstories left to be fully in the twisty ending

When I first saw this I was pretty 'blah' about it. I don't mind gore in horror movies, but I'm not a big fan of it in the torture outlook. Now this movie seems like a walk in the park compared to the excessive crap that's been released since. Combine my total disinterest in these types of movies with bad acting and a relatively stupid script and you have this turd of a film. At least this one was so bad that I didn't have to waste my time trying any of the sequels out.

When you wake up in fucked up bathroom with your leg chained to a wall and you can't remember how you got there, it usually means you've just had a cracking good piss-up the night before. The fact this movie doesn't celebrate that makes it a bit of a killjoy.

Never understood how this first one never resonated with critics, especially compared to other horror films, but this has to at least go down as one of the more influential horror films of all time. It's pretty self contained, creepy, and if you're stomach can handle it obviously, quite gory. Not the biggest fan in using gore to push your movie, but Wan actually makes it feel like it's in the background, unlike the others. On top of that twist, Saw borderlines on a classic for me.
