Early Herz short captures the film maker's love of the eccentric and creating self contained experiences that function on their own terms. As expected, it is full of odd characters, unusual shots and is unconventionally edited. Thematically it addresses the value and meaning assigned to objects, both in a subjective sense and in relation to time. One man's junk is another man's treasure, but it's the act of creation itself, inherently embedded in objects, that ultimately matters. Good.

I thought I was about to have fun with a madcap, loose surreal film. Instead I watched a juvenile, audience hostile 30 minutes of Herz being pleased with himself to mock everything he can. I guess this would have been bold and maybe even incendiary in 1960s Communist Czechoslovakia but now it's just so tiring that even when he tries to blaspheme I don't even rise to get offended at his childish tactics, instead rolling my eyes like the icon of Jesus the characters are sawing apart.
