A sleazy tabloid editor gets himself in hot water... and has to stop his own ace reporter from exposing him! This is terrific stuff, directed by always-capable Phil Karlson and based on a novel by Sam Fuller. Tight script with a lot of snappy dialogue and sordid details, and good performances all around. Between this and The Mob, Broderick Crawford is growing on me quick. As the noose tightens around his neck, you simultaneously want to see him wriggle out of it and get what's coming to him.

Phil Karlson's newspaper picture suffers in comparison to Fuller's Park Row (Fuller being the source of both screenplays), but it does entertain and is satisfying even if you wished for a little more meat (though less ham from Broderick Crawford). The plot is too far-fetched to be taken seriously --this is definitely pulpy noir type stuff.

An interesting little thriller with some interesting outdoor photography. Broderick Crawford's heavy is almost sympathetic, and Rosemary DeCamp is threadbare and slightly sleazy in a surprisingly downbeat role.

A great script is the heart of the film, though the rest is quite solid too. The dialogue has quite a nice zing to it, but it's the way the characters are crafted where the writing's greatest strength lies. The three leads and a few key secondary characters, are all very compelling and play off each other perfectly. The plot's good too, a sort of detective story where we get to see the noose tightening slowly on a killer as he squirms. It's excellent the way all those elements come together.

Broderick Crawford (from 'All the King's Men') is very good in this superior slice of noir. And it's even wonderfully short (only 80 minutes) - always a big selling point in itself.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

An excellent script, constant suspense and dynamic characters. Simple and effective.

Criminally underseen noir starring the great Broderick Crawford. The whole setup is smart and works really well, with the ace tabloid reporter trained by editor Crawford (who transformed the paper from respectability to a tabloid) doggedly chasing a murderer that (unbeknownst to him, but known to us) is Crawford himself. Crawford meanwhile tries to undermine the investigation while seeming enthusiastic so as to avoid suspicion. Fantastic.

There was a lot of big stars wanted for the lead, but they got John Derek. Didn't stop this from being a entertaining investigation. Broderick Crawford certainly did his part, and Donna Reed carried her own. I wasn't quite sure at first how to feel, because there was something unfocused about the production. But the mood got increasingly better crafted and in the end it had all the suspense it wanted to have and it was a satisfying noir.
