A hard-to-like Stewart Granger overacts his way through this seemingly long, corny production that champions the instigators of the proto-communist French Revolution. The exemplary swordfighting, along with Janet Leigh, helped get me through this.

a highly enjoyable swashbuckler that is a bit on the lengthy side, but never leaves the viewer bored. this has a good story, and the acting is ok, but that swordplay really stands out. granger should have drawn many more parallels to jimmy stewart other than looks, he's just damned good.

My second-favorite swashbuckler (after Mamoulian's "Zorro.") Granger at his best.

Moderately paced set piece which will leave you swash well and truly buckled. Some rather dry patches lose a little pace mid way through but the story still roles along. Granger is probably at his best here with some technically demanding stunts and very impressive sword fights. The plot could be stronger in parts and the only down-side is a real resemblance to Lena and Lamont's Dancing Cavalier scene (Singing in the Rain) which I struggle to get past.

Light-hearted swashbuckler that entertains from start to finish. Great swordplay (especially the finale), beautiful Eleanor Parker and Janet Leigh (he ends up with the wrong gal, if you ask me), and a breezy pace. I feel sorry for the real Scaramouche in this movie. The poor guy must be seriously bummed.

The last fencing duel was solid but the rest of the film was hard to sit through. Of the films I haven't seen, it was the swashbuckler with the highest PSI, and even though I love the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Mark of Zorro", I think it's safe to conclude that this is one of my least favorite genres and that I had better not touch any more of them with a ten foot pole.

Scaramouche (1952) is a class picture where Stewart Granger truly comes to shine. Got some of the best swashbuckling scenes I've seen. Sure, it goes corny in romance, but it's utterly charming. Relies a little much on Granger's charms and honestly should have gotten more out of the dazzling Janet Leigh, who becomes more of a pin-up than a character. Especially when Eleanor Parker's role becomes so much more nuanced. Still, it's a stunning picture.

Only good thing is Mel Ferrer's performance.
