Seymour Hicks played Ebenezer Scrooge probably more times than all the other actors who have portrayed the greedy miser combined. He started in 1901 as a young man, and by 1935, had the character down cold. I used to think that Alastair Sim was the quintessential Ebenezer Scrooge, but after watching Hicks, I'm starting to change my mind. His Scrooge is more crotchety, and mean spirited in the beginning, while his transformation to a humble philanthropist is on par with Sim.

A little difficult to get in the spirit of Christmas in June, but old Scrooge did it! While I've never seen this dramatization of the story, but it's something very familiar. This is how Scrooge has been done many times over. Arch British in true Dickens style! No doubt Seymour Hicks knew what he was doing portraying the grumpy old man. He put a lot of personality into it. And with many other great character actors joining the production, this was Scrooge how Scrooge should be done!

I am tempted to say that Seymour Hicks is the best Scrooge of all-time. So much so it's a bit scary. The rest of the cast is excellent, as is the stylish direction. Details are changed here and there, but they work. Authentically British, charming, and old-fashioned - Dickens would approve.

While definitely not the best version of the classic Christmas story but is still quite solid. I might not watch this every year but I would recommend people give it a watch.

A great Scrooge (Really, this is the role model i'll think of from now on), a great Cratchit (Middle-aged, pathetic, but moderately believable), many daring visual takes on the ghosts, a nice build up in the first part... but then it all sort of falls apart into a whirlpool of rushed scenes and script cut-outs that inevitabely throws the movie into a weak and emotionally "off" conclusion. I really wanted to like it more, but what we have is what we have.
