Comedy, Drama

When the introverted young Walter (Osment) finds himself forced to spend the summer with a pair of eccentric great-uncles (Caine, Duvall) on a remote ranch in Texas, he's understandably unnerved. But left to their own devices, this mismatched threesome begins to forge an unlikely bond. A heartwarming comedy about adventures, discoveries, growth and trust. (New Line Cinema)

This was sold to me as Michael Caine and Robert Duvall being a pair cantankerous old bastards...and there's a bit of that at the start, but this is mostly a dumb boy's adventure/coming of age tale featuring way too much of Haley Joel Osment and his stupid gurning face. I hated the flashback within a flashback structure and the obviousness of everything that happens. I doubt I was part of intended audience for this film: it's way too cutesy to be anything but family fare.

charming is the best word to describe this movie. duvall and caine were two of the my favorite characters ever to be thought up by hollywood. great story if not a bit overly geared toward kids.

I especially liked the humour they used in this movie, but also the story in the story was really beautiful. This movie has got quite everything. Only in the end, when the son of the Sheikh arrived, that was a false note. That was a bit too much.

M.Caine and R.Duvall are great and deserved a better overall movie, but plot and HJ.Osmont don't keep up. *Preview*: #12#, exp-3*, story, (reviews), actors, R2.

The last Haley Joel Osment movie that will be good for a while. And of course Michael Caine and Robert Duvall are amazing. I mean, you watch the film for them, of course. Added plus if you're a fan of Bloomcounty, Opus, or Berkeley Breathed.

I only saw the TV version, so I'm sure I didn't get the full story on all accounts. That said, I did like the movie. I thought it was funny and sweet, and very well acted on the part of Caine and Duvall! (Osment was alright. At points he was good, at others I felt he struggled). I liked the "messages" that movie held, and I adored the lion, Jasmine!

An entertaining and occasionally charming film about aging and reflecting on the past. The story is a little heavy on the symbolism and too light on characterization, but Caine and Duvall are a fun pair to have on screen together. Osment is the weak link, as he's awkward and not very likable, and all the plot elements involving him and his ridiculous mother are unpleasant and unconvincing (Did they really need to have the only significant female character be so irredeemably selfish?).

This is a nice feel-good movie. Caine and Duvall create a pair of delightfully cantankerous old farts.

The ending along with the racism ruined it. First, the trope of the white conqueror is a bit myopic and the female casting was overtly incorrect. For 2003, that's pretty bad. Then part of the lecture says that good and love are worth believing in regardless of the truth (of the stories, but other things as well). But then McCanlies ruins that whole message! But those two old guys sure do seem to know how to have some fun.

I never would have imagined Duvall and Caine playing together, but as brothers they are very good. The brother's characters are broadened when Osment is introduced to their lives. The flashback sequences are very well done. I even enjoyed the end credits for the comic strip artwork.

Don't think Dennis the Menace or Grumpy Old Men; this film is a serious drama about both old age and youth. This film is easily on par with films such as Dan in Real Life.

I laugh just thinking about it. Robert Duvall and Michael Caine should disassociate themselves with this as much as they can.

It's a movie that wears its emotions on its sleeves, which it fortunately wears well. It really helps when the "lions" are two great characters played by great actors.

This is a lighthearted family movie. For what it is it was enjoyable. Duval and Caine are a lot of fun to watch as they shoot fish, shoot at salesmen, and try their best to annoy relatives that come by trying to inherit their fortune. I liked the humor, I liked the story, it was just a lot of fun. I understand it was maybe a bit too positive perhaps for some people, but that doesn't really bother me.

Largely sweet and genial coming of ager is a little too delicate and slight to cope with Caine and Duvall – they’re both fun to have around, but there’s the odd feeling of watching a world renowned chef prepare a Big Mac in their performances. Works best in THE PRINCESS BRIDE fantasy tradition of warm “tall-tales”; the scheming relatives subplot is overplayed and unnecessary, especially in Sedgwick’s broadly played, ugly harpy; her brutal comeuppance doesn’t quite fit with the lighter material.
