The Age&Scrapelli dialogues and much of the theatrics steer this nonchalantly toward comedy, but in essence it doesn't seem like Vincenzoni wrote a light-hearted social satire. Agnese (Sandrelli) is essentially raped by Peppino and therefore branded a whore by her community as her absolute monster of a father endeavors to wed her to her now reluctant rapist. She is battered by both. Sicilian culture is portrayed as extremely patriarchal and misogynistic. Funny? At times, but mostly shocking.

I totally don't get this one. Evidently we're all supposed to get big yucks out of watching a assortment of people go through great pain. It's dull besides, and not even in particularly good taste

Ah, o patriarcado! Sátira mordaz contra o patriarcado que não é particularmente engraçada, mas provoca sentimentos díspares como raiva e desalento.

Boring and not funny at all. It's a bad version of kitchen sink masterpiece Hindle Wakes (1927). But Carlo Rustichelli's score is well.

Delightfully vicious (and rightfully so) in the way it condemns old world values of "honor" and patriarchy. Worth a look, but overall not quite as funny as Divorce Italian Style.

Top notch satire mercilessly takes down the concept of "honor culture" and stays wickedly enjoyable without losing sight of the weight of the subject. Pitch perfect in it's details and laugh-out loud funny in it's absurd yet somehow believable displays. Couldn't feel more timely still today, and that is a sad fact indeed.
