Give a major role to a rapper - the death rattle of a horror franchise.

While "Bride of Chucky"(1998) was made with its tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek, this sequel feels like the first real attempt at a horror/comedy in the series from Mancini and co. However unfortunately, it's also Mancini's first time directing, and it seems to show all over this half-baked mess. Again, while I was really interested in the continuation of the domestication of "Chucky" with Glen/Glenda's storyline, Mancini can't seem to do much with it, or the half-assed meta-Hollywood plot.

Child's Play tries to go full New Nightmare to very mixed results. Tilly does what she can with the material, but half the time it's hard to tell when her moaning about being stuck in direct-to-video sequels is scripted or just genuinely Jennifer Tilly regretting her career choices.

Gotta say, I think Seed is an improvement over Bride, mostly because of its bigger reliance on humor. This is probably the most entertaining that we've seen Chucky since the 2nd movie, and it's pretty fun all-around. The New Nightmare-style of movie isn't the most oringinal concept and it's execution has a lot to be desired. It's about what you'd expect from this franchise, really. Nothing to lose if you don't watch it.

Seed Of Chucky pushes the horror-comic-self-parodic tendencies of Bride Of Chucky more explicitly into 'postmodern' territory, functioning as a kind of meta-film about Chucky and the entire movie industry. But unlike Wes Craven's New Nightmare, there is really no point to these 'meta games' other than clowning around, which means it gets rather tedious quickly despite its early promise. The cast are keen though and make the most of Mancini's masturbatory ode to his own creation.

This film cast John Waters, it knows exactly what it is -- a campy horror film. There is a fun meta aspect to this, and I spent a lot of time just saying, "what the hell?" out loud. I was not expecting to see Chucky masturbate, but then again, the scene lived up to the title.

If I had any idea why I hold this film in such a high regard, I'd tell you. I am ashamed of myself for not only liking it, but for having seen it 12 times.

I expected it to be completely unwatchable. It was a little bit better than that. When it started I was surprised that there were some funny one liners and cheesy gags and humor, but after a little while it just went completely off track and made it almost exactly what I expected (essentially the whole second half). Jennifer Tilly was passable, and I'm always enthused when I see John Waters doing anything. I'd totally understand if someone didn't like this or didn't want to see it, though.

Billy Boyd, what the fuck are you doing?! You were in Lord of the Rings for fucks sake! Did you owe Mancini money? Are you in danger? When you think it can't possibly get any worse, Mancini digs deeper and finds new levels of crap. Two words: Masturbating Chucky!

Chucky goes full BASKET CASE 3 this time - not quite as wild as that benchmark of strangeness but, like BC3, I am inclined to forgive the sometimes faltering execution for the batshit ideas here - John Waters filming a masturbating Chucky makes me wish Waters himself would step behind the camera for one of these films! Toothless as Hollywood satire and not really a horror film per se, but individual elements work quite well, especially Tilly's hilarious performance in whatever form you find her!

The benign doll Glen is an orphan, born of the bizarre relationship between the devilish murderous doll Chucky and his equally insane bride Tiffany. When there are plans to make a film about his parents' heinous crimes, Glen heads to Hollywood to bring his bloodthirsty mom and dad back to life. However, the family does not seem to get along very well. Chucky can't believe his son is off-limits to a proper killing spree. And Tiffany can't believe her favorite actress Jennifer...

Chucky and Tif's son finds them and awakens them once again. This is the Child's Play attempt at a new nightmare. It is definitely a full-out comedy this time, which is a good thing because what works in the earlier ones is the incongruity between the dolls and the humans. Introducing more dolls is not a good idea unless you ramp up the comedy as well. Tilly and Redman aren't afraid to make fun of themselves, and it is refreshing. Also: John Waters!

It looks ugly, it's written ugly, and it absolutely reeks of early-to-mid-2000's schlock. There could have been something interesting happening with Glen's storyline, but of course (like most 2000's movies) it botched that by having all the subtlety of a mule kick to the face. Most of the humor doesn't land, and what little of it does still doesn't save it from being really, really bad. Jennifer Tilly is a treasure, as always, but beyond that it's a bleak first ending to the franchise.

It's amazing the direction the Chucky movies have taken (or rather, the direction they've been lead on by the mindless movie studio execs) since its inception - mild, enjoyable horror to outright travesty. Outside of Chucky's 3-4 one-liners which might evoke a chuckle or two, this movie is pointless and senseless. I'm glad the spate of Chucky movies are over, finally (or at least for now).
