Some strikingly beautiful cinematography. Story is more concerned with theme than character even, which works for the most part. Couldn’t imagine a better title for this.

There's a scene in this film where the two main characters kiss on a beach, as the waves rise and fall around them. I'm unsure whether or not this is a conscious echo of From Here to Eternity, but the effect is the same: a tearing down of the old guard, a rebellious cinema, one that does not concern itself with the staid rules of the past. Like Godard in France, Oshima made a cutting-edge movie about lovers who live fast and die young. It still feels hip and revolutionary today.

Ôshima perfectly captures the zeitgeist of disillusioned Japanese youth in the 1960s.
