A mediocre music bio-pic of singer Selena, with a better-than-usual performance by Jennifer Lopez. But there's still not much reason to search it out.

Having never heard anything by the titular artist that this movie depicts, I have to take the film completely on its own merits. As a film, Selena fails due to its over reliance on melodrama, and the need to include lengthy musical numbers that left me looking at my watch. On the positive side the acting is competent; Jennifer Lopez turns in a surprisngly efficient performance, as does Edward James Olmos. But even their best efforts barely make this film watchable. Pass on this.

Every year in chorus (why they would show pop singing in chorus is beyond me), we watched this movie. Crap.

I saw this way too many times in Spanish class. Jennifer Lopez at perhaps her least annoying, though.

A loving tribute to a phenomenon cut off in her prime. Jennifer Lopez is very charming as Selena and blends right into the role. Edward James Olmos ranges from sentimental, to happy, to fumingly angry, to kind in a heartbeat and delivers some of the best lines of the movie. Some have criticized the movie for being fluffy and I don't mind the movie for that. Maybe I'm a sucker for it, but I'm even more a sucker for a movie that obviously had a lot of love put into it. This is one of those movies.

I like Selena's music and I don't hade J Lo, but this is kind of pedestrian, which is odd.

What should have been fascinating is instead just boring. Which is a pity 'cos I normally don't mind music biopics

Probably the only good movie Jennifer Lopez will ever make. Too bad it made her think she could launch a singing career.

Hopefully there's a circle in hell for directors of by-the-numbers biopics. There are far worse movies than this out there, but most of the worse ones are also more interesting than this stunningly generic romp. Lopez is okay though.

Sweat to god, Jennifer Lopez COULD act once. Back before she became J-Lo, she was actually talented. This isn't a great movie, but it's a *nice* movie, and there's something totally appealling about the young Lopez, who embraces this role for all she's worth.

Insipid "biopic" -- family-authorized to make sure that nothing too tangy intrudes -- about the tejano singing star and Grammy winner, a rags-to-riches success story ("We think she's the next Gloria Estefan!") abruptly halted by homicide. Lopez, lip-synching to original recordings, rises well above exhilaration and to within a step stool of ecstasy. For brief moments, she elevates the entire (admittedly lightweight) puff piece.

I have seen this movie 3 times, none of them willingly. I almost have a Stockholm Syndrome thing going on with this film. Someone please help me.
