The movie starts out with an intriguing sense of vulnerability for its lead character but eventually turns him into an invincible one man army which is laughably vapid. The film drags on with characters making unbelievably stupid decisions and a backstory that was painfully obvious, with no real insight or motivation for anyone to have any reason to care about Brosnan's character. I'm not even sure what the last 20 minutes of the movie was supposed to convey; it struck me as convulted non-sense.

It is okay as far as westerns go, though the slow plot is patched up a lot by Brosnan and Neeson. The ending is full of symbolism and in my mind neither one of the main characters was any longer alive at that point and the last scene made more sense that way.

Sadly, the film kind of falls apart in the last act. When we finally learn why Neeson is pursuing Brosnan, it's not really very compelling (kind of stolen from "The Outlaw Josey Wales" too) and really not staged in a plausible fashion. The two meander off into a desert and everything becomes slow and laboriously symbolic. Still, it's 3/4 of a compelling western with a really great cast.

Absorbing from the first shot, and years ahead of The Revenant, despite a clunky script. Only in the last Odyssey orientated third does it begin to lose momentum.

Not bad. The story is good, solid acting and great cinematography by John Toll, but David Von Ancken's direction and writing is completely devoid of any artistic personality.
