Serenity

'Serenity' does everything right. It takes all that was good about 'Firefly' and turns it up to 11. The cinematography is great and Ejiofor is a nice addition. Whether you've seen the show or not, it's an incredibly fun film - about as good as blockbuster entertainment gets - and I want more, dammit.

A little sad at times, but Serenity is a successful fantastic closure to Whedon's beloved series. It looked great with a strong supporting cast. That being said, had it's funny moments and I loved it. Watch Firefly first, you'll like it better.

While it does rely on some pre-knowledge of the world, it still manages to provide one of the most fun sci-fi films in recent memory, both through its subversion and embrace of the genre's greatest tropes.

Enjoyable, heartfelt, well-acted sums it just about up. Unjustly flopping at the box-office, this Firefly follow-up does its best to reel the non-fans in, but only succeeds about three-quarters of the way. Should make director and some of the actors A-listers.

Here's how it is: for all his feminist talk, at his core Joss Whedon is a reactionary libertarian bro. And that illustrates itself in this Space Western where all the heroes are essentially ex-Confederates still fighting a lost cause. In a way that appeals to fanboys who get to throw themselves into a space opera where every character is Han Solo. And it works! There are some good fight sequences, nice battles, and a fantastic villain. It's just weird to look at it knowing what we know now.

I would never recommend this to a not Firefly fan, as apart from the TV-series this movie is not even interesting (I mean, surely one doesn't understand anything). Compared to the series it has a lower quality, but if you're a fan, this movie is a decent ending, but most important, a necessary one. But I would have refused this movie in change for a Second Season for sure.

Fantastic film, shame it doesn't look like there'll be sequels due to it not pulling in enough scratch. Firefly was badly treated and shouldn't have been cancelled in the first place. The rich universe became richer and I don't know anyone who's see Serenity and had anything bad to say. Not often a film has 100% approval...

Other than the first 15-20 minutes that quickly introduce the characters to viewers unfamiliar with "Firefly," it successfully feels like a continuation of the show. It wraps up the biggest questions viewers have, (namely what River's story is) and concludes the overall arc with a bang. While this could be viewed as a stand-alone film, the emotional impact of the final half hour will only hit those that have the prior 14 episode history with these characters. The series never lets you down.

It's too bad this did so poorly at the box office. People have no idea what they missed out on. Sci-fi action done with so much fun and good spirit, the only thing I can compare it to was 1977 Star Wars, but w/ vastly better dialogue and deeper storyline.

A unique gem of a film. Probably the best film adaptation of or follow-up to a television show ever. Much like George Lucas with Star Wars, Whedon creates a marvelous universe to get immersed in. The characters are lovable and funny. A fantastic ending to a fantastic series.

Space Cowboys. Nathan Fillion. Pretty girls. Awesome assassin. Pretty damn cool. (rewatch for probably the 5th time: I've overrated it but am entirely unwilling to change it.)

I rated this movie high but for those that have not seen Firefly, it would probably rate much lower. Combined with the series it is wonderful but not near a big enough taste from what would have been an amazing television show had it not been cancelled.

Excellent Sci-Fi spin-off from the ill fated TV show Firefly. Great if you are not a fan of the show, even better if you are, this is one of the finest Sci-Fi flicks of 2005

Although it does have it's Indiana Jones moments, it's too much Josh Whedon for my taste. The story is kinda lame, and Whedon ends up deploying his Buffy/Angel tactics, that work so well on y-generation teenagers: Instead of doing what you think I'll be doing, I'll do exactly the opposite - all the time! Hohahehohahohehoharrr... That said, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nathan Fillion really keeps this movie going. One by great acting. One by doing... whatever the hell it is Fillion does to us...

Love it! It's got the action, the humor, the style, the rugged, fast-paced dialogue, and all the sci-fi / western goodness of the show in spades. And I love to see Nathan Fillion on the big screen. Chiwetel Ejiofor is an awesome bad guy, and has an impossible name to pronounce.

Very fun sci-fi movie, the characters are likeable, the plot is interesting, the action scenes are good, and the script is engaging and funny. Is not a life changing film, but is a good film.

Most cancelled television series just fade out and get lost in the shuffle after a few years. Almost none of them get to have the opportunity to tie things up and appease fans with a feature film. Firefly did, and what you get is a more action packed and to the point than the show. It's the best of both worlds because you still get the amazing characters, but with a long run time and tons of action. Serenity is one of the most entertaining sci-fi films that I've ever seen. Ever.

It helps to have seen the Firefly series to best appreciate this film. Serenity is not a very deep or meaningful film, but it is visually pleasant, stylish, fun, and exciting. A great sci-fi western action flick.

I would like to know which dimwit TV executive thought it was a good idea to cancel Firefly so early? One of the best, most offbeat & satisfying space western ever made. I have long wished for more episodes, or something else like it. Every character brought something unique. It was silly, exciting, outrageous, cool, engaging, fun, entertaining and above all, different. Serenity was Firefly's final gasp of life, and though not a stellar movie, was still quite enjoyable.

The way Sci fi movies should be. Incredibly well written, great performances from a cast who are used to each other and play off each other well. Not to mention hilariously clever writing. Joss really is great at what he does... among my favourite films of last year.

Good movie, seems as though they compacted a full two seasons of the show Fire Fly into it. Compaired to the show this movie does not add up. But as a movie, it is made of pure awesome.

Serenity does not make the transition from television to the big screens unscathed. While I appreciate its more plot-driven storytelling, it unfortunately feels a bit truncated and loses some of the charm that made the TV show such a joy to watch. Nevertheless, it retains most of its wit and offers a satisfying conclusion to the abrupt end of what could have been a great story had the show not been cancelled. Something that I have not fully come to terms with. Oh Firefly, how I miss you.

Sci-fi the way it should be. You need to watch the TV series DVD's to appreciate the film completely, but this was a great film with highly creative touches.

Firefly was one of the best shows on TV, before its inexplicable canning, Serenity lives up to all expectations. It brings the same wit of the show, and merges it with a darker story. The special effects are perfectly understated when they need to be, and Very impressive when they need to be that. Acting is flawless, particularly Summer Glau's performance as River. All i can say is that they better do another one!

Watchable even without knowing firefly (although first watching the series defenitely adds something more). The story is solid and quite spectacular without being over the top and gives us some laughs even. This is highly entertaining scifi and a must see for everyone.

As a finale to Firefly, it's great, but it's above-average even if you've never seen an episode of the series. It's a shame that the ending dashes hopes for an eventual revival (a hope that's been dashed to death already).

Up there with Star Wars

I admit, I was surprised at Whedon's big-screen talents. Still, this is a big, space opera romp, with tons of great sequences.

An extremely good film, whether you're a fan of Firefly or not. Well acted, paced, and shot, this is the new sci-fi masterpiece.

You don't *have* to watch Firefly first, but I think it makes Serenity more enjoyable. I like shows/movies that cross genres that don't normally go together, so I got hooked on Firefly and although Serenity is less of a space-western than the show, it still has a bit of that flavour. My main beef with this film is that the crew member that died, shouldn't have.

If you liked the TV series then this is must watch... if you've never seen the TV series watch this but be prepared to hunt down the TV series afterwards. Highly addictive film that isn't a cliche sci-fi filme.

I saw this movie previous to watching the show Firefly and I still enjoyed this movie immensely. An orginal style, humor, and pacing elevate this movie above normal TV adaptations.

Firefly on the big screen moves into action and away the quirky space cowboy feeling of the TV show. Good, but disappointing overall.

I really love the characters (having watched Firefly first) and happy to see more of them, as well as get some closure on open threads from the series. As compared to the show, I'm less forgiving of the direction and poor effects because I was hoping for better from a feature. So it won't rake among my favorite sci-fi/action flicks, but this crew will always be one of my favorite rag-tag ensembles.

joss whedon creates such a compelling world, and such great, human characters, while still keeping a sense of irony. Great, and great chemistry between actors - you can see they are having a ball.

Brought back the characters we love and gave them the send off they deserved. As great as it would be if they gave us new episodes (and they left it open so they could) at least we got a pretty good movie that gives us proper closure.If you have any interest in this, watch the series first, they are both very enjoyable.

Great movie! A must see for every Sci-Fi fan, but hey, if you're a Sci-Fi fan, you certainly have seen it already. Feature film based on the great "Firefly" series, which unfortunately and to the anger of the fans ran only for 13 episodes. This movie was made because of the huge amount of protests from all over the world following the cancellation of "Firefly".

Not bad as a standalone action/sci-fi film if you've never seen the firefly series. The blending of sci-fi with western elements is inspired but is still lacking in writing. Joss Whedon's writing also descends too far into internet fan service and ridiculous female archetypes. The most notable being the character River who is a 90 lb little girl soaking wet that seems to be able to floor 200 lb guys with ridiculous punches and kicks.

Said to be the next Star Wars, doubt it, but its the best sci fi out there

I enjoyed it on its own, but it becomes a slightly better movie after watching the series (I added 2 points).

Cannot find a better movie

Rewatching this after finally finding the time to sit through the sadly cut short "Firefly" is a totally different experience from the first time I watched it. Everything means that bit more. While I'd say it never quite reaches the heights or charm levels of "Firefly", seeing the the characters and their universe expanded is a treat. The final 30 minutes or so are particuarly enjoyable, with space battles, fights, resolutions and set pieces all coming together nicely. Some more would be great!

If you loved the series, you'll love the movie, but even those who haven't seen Firefly can appreciate this exciting sci-fi adventure. It's still all about the characters, and the cast continues to be superb, but the higher budget is put to some impressive work with the visual effects as well. It suffers only for an infuriatingly pointless event late in the movie and a sort of deus-ex-machina ending, but these do not mar it too much and in the end it is a wonderful ending to Firefly.

Great series. Movie was a bit abrupt. This is a guy who should have Star Trek funding. Josh Wheadon is way under valued in this media environment.

Fans of the television series will not be disappointed with this film. All the cast is back and they do a great job with their characters. This movie is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it to fans of the show.

Writer/director Joss Whedon creates an awesome movie, even for the uninitiated. Sizzling dialogue, great performances from every actor (Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau deserve to be Big Stars) and an emotional roller coaster ride of a storyline, make Serenity the best thing to come out of genre cinema in ages. Recommended viewing for everyone.

Having never seen the television show and barely remembering the ads, I was quite surprised at the results when I rented the DVD of the movie. So surprised, in fact, that I bought the television shows on DVD the next day. Even though I liked the serie Firefly very much, the film Serenity is not that hot. You can clearly see, that Joss Whedon wanted to explain tens of serie episodes in one film. But Malcolm's quotes are still funny as hell.

Serenity is a joy to watch. As a fan of Firefly, it's a better conclusion than one could hope for, and does as much as it can to tie up loose ends, answer questions, and also deliver a big-budget episode of the television show. It does all of that and more. Non-fans can still appreciate the visuals, snappy dialogue, and enjoyable action. Fans will get so much more out of it, and after watching will be very pleased with what they've just seen.

As a fan of firefly I enjoyed the movie, but for non-fans it might be a bit tough to get through.

Television series to movie, I must say they did an excellent job. The casting and the special effects were well balanced. A very "quotable" filled film its something I can watch time and time again. It also makes me what to pick up the Foxfire series.

How to conclude a journey properly.

I won't deny the film has excellent choreography and editing, but the older I get, the more Whedon's smugness taints the proceedings for me, and the more the self-indulgent 19th-century-prospector diction intermingled with random Chinese grates on my nerves. With that said, Chiwetel Ejiofor's villain stands as not only the highlight of this film, but one of the great sci-fi villains in film history.

An all-around piece of enjoyable summertime entertainment; Joss Whedon takes the complex, although relatable, characters from the small-screen sci-fi 'Firefly' series and effectively translates them onto the big screen, immersing them into a rich, action-filled environment that leaves fans satisfied and casual movie-goers thirsting for more.

Entertaining sci-fi adventure (feeling a little like a STAR WARS knock-off) will undoubtedly have more resonance for fans/viewers of FIREFLY - speaking as a complete newbie, there's at least enough expository information to navigate the central relationships without much confusion; while it never feels like anything but a TV episode writ large, and a lack of familiarity with the source material leaves a few "let's go with it" moments in the mid-section, it is still a genial and enjoyable ride.

The series should definitely have been allowed to continue, but this movie is a good end for this mythology. Great action sequences here, but it is the very nice character dialog that sets this one apart.

A cult favorite for sure. I was a bit sceptical at first, but this movie totally won me over, mostly due to the casts performace. The 15 episodes of 'Firefly' that these actors spent with the charactors made there performance in the movie seem effortless and comfortable. Pretty good action and effects as well.

I saw this movie a few years ago, not knowing about Firefly, i just thought this was some sci-fi movie. I thought it was good enough although it didn't leave a bigger impression than that. Recently i watched the show though and now that i knew and loved the characters, the movie was so much more enjoyable. I thought it was a great conclusion to the show. I'm sad i won't see more of that crew and their adventures now tho. :(
