An obvious influence on Forrest Gump and a phenomenal performance by Cooper make this film essential. Don't go in expecting a war movie, this is more of a character study with an almost-overwhelming religious theme, but it works.

Back in the days when a person of real faith could be the hero of a successful Hollywood movie, without their faith being minimized or belittled. Gary Cooper did a great job. I really had to read up on the true events of York's heroism in the war, because it was almost too incredible to believe. If you just want a shoot-em-up war movie, perhaps look elsewhere. Personally, I loved that half the movie was the treatment of York's back-woods life before the war.

A 150 minute 'war' movie with only 25 minutes of actual war.

The best thing about this is Gary Cooper. What a fantastic, soulful performance. This is a man at war, first with himself, and then with what it means to be a good citizen. Hawks films the war scenes beautifully, lots of texture and excellent tracking shots. Hawks also finds three or four moments of exquisite poetic quality, making the film not just enjoyable, but also memorable.

A somewhat interesting melding of crowd pleasing propaganda with authentic spiritual angst. Supposedly, this was a movie that would make Salinger cry. I can see why--genuine acting across the board, except perhaps Joan Leslie. Gary Cooper could inject a vital dose of humility into any character.

A war movie even a pacifist would love! The unlikely true story of the most decorated soldier of World War I as played in the most gullible way by the ever handsome charmer Gary Cooper. Quite possibly the most humanly likable film of the Great War ever put on screen!

Obviously this whole thing rides on Cooper's shoulders and damn does he carry it.

In the summer of 1941, as war raged around the globe, and American isolationists continued to object to U.S. entry into the war, Warner Bros.' released their Hollywood version of the American WWI hero, Alvin York, and his journey from drunk, to born-again-Christian, to conscientious objector, to war hero, just in time for Independence Day weekend. The latest of their Patriotic/American, pro-war films was one of the handful of films accused of being pro-war propaganda in 1941 by isolationists.

Interesting story and great acting by Gary Cooper. The accents are pretty annoying though, and the born again christian message is a little overplayed. Also, I know this is based on a true story, but the climax seems hard to believe, even if that's what actually happened.

Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. A backwoods draftee demonstrates convicion and valor in what was one of the most hellish stretches of land anywhere in the 20th century. The acting is top notch, with local dialects VERY well learned.

Remarkably not good considering story, cast, and director. Short at all times on pacing and inspiration

My grandma had me sit and watch this with her, and it's actually very funny.. despite the seriousness of the setting, I found the tone set by Cooper to be one that is heart warming.

it's hard to decipher exactly what kind of message this is supposed to be getting across, maybe, that religious people of low intelligence are credulous? i suppose it doesn't matter, since after listenting to walter brennan prattling on in hillbilly heaven for forty five minutes, then finally the action starts--and the war scenes are extremely satisfying. if you fast forward the first hour you can get to the meat without having to deal with the failed moral teachings--which is good.

Not Hawks best, but still very good. Gary Cooper is fine, but the hillbilly atmosphere is a little much.

After an extraordinary and highly entertaining first half of the film - albeit a couple of misplaced slapstick moments - the second half, still comprising of a well-crafted and well-acted film, is hurt by the overt Americana and overly-imposed patriotism. The latter is causing the film to fail in being believable especially through the scenes showing the creation of the hero. The only purpose of the 15 minutes is populism. A politically biased film, no surprise it got many Academy nominations.

While Cooper is outstanding, it's my only criticism that he was too old for the part. Otherwise, great movie and story!

I can see why viewers loved this movie: the aw-shucks turnaround of the hard-luck farm boy after finding religion, and then a swelling patriotic spell during The Great War. I've not liked most of the Cooper movies I've seen, but here he shines brightly. Made in an era when we wanted heroes, rather than wanting to tear them down.

The first half is more interesting than the second, which goes a little too far toward the typical military propaganda common in war films of this era, especially toward the end. It's much less of a war film than you'd think, and the war aspects are the least interesting. Cooper is effective and Joan Leslie is adorable.
