Ever seen the show "Survivor" and wished they would just start killing each other?? Series 7 literally gives its contestants the guns. The film is not merely a satire on reality TV. It is an example of just how far people will shamelessly go for fame. 6 contenders are pitted against each other in a no holds barred, kill or be killed contest. The reigning champ is Dawn, a hard-nosed, mother-to-be. We go back and forth between Dawn and the other 5 contenders to see if someone can dethrone Dawn... (imdb)

Great concept, wretched execution

First off it's not a movie criticizing reality TV, it's a dark humour movie. The execution is spot on (with ad breaks and all!) but the characters lack personality, even if the acting is pretty good.

When a film imitates reality TV as faithfully as "The Contenders" it falls into the same traps. Lots of forced sentimentality, crappy montages and annoying characters. However, to the film's credit, it finally winks at the viewer when the ending rolls around, finishing with a "scene reenactment" that almost makes the entire experience worth it. Certainly a unique film, if a very flawed one.

Very interesting idea. Somewhat campy and rigid for a pseudo-reality style, but some pretty solid scenes. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it, strange...

While rife with good ideas, it's ultimately way too silly in execution, which unravels the satire to a point where its message is lost.

Series 7: The Contenders holds up a skewed mirror to our chosen form of prurient entertainment, but as time goes by, and these shows grow more exploitative, it's becoming even harder to discern the difference between reality and a complete satire like this one.

If there's one problem with the film it's that, in aping the manufactured drama style and narration of the reality shows its mocking, it feels repetitive and drawn out. On the other hand it's consistently hilarious, hits nearly every mark it shoots for and has characters that are simultaneously absurd and believable.

Another underrated film that does the best with what it can. Cast works well for the most part, writing is clever. Pretty good satire all in all.

Not seen by many, but a truly underrated social commentary showing just what the world of reality television is coming to. Done on a shoe string budget, and it shows, but the potshots it takes at American pop culture are dead on.

Could have been good, but my god what a failure. Made in the style of reality tv, which I hate so maybe that sways my vote. Truly amateur on all fronts; filming, effects, flow, acting. I did watch it all just to see the conclusion, what the fuck?

Boring as hell. Really slow. The reenactment scene almost saved it for me but then the last shot threw all that out the window. just a generally bad film with some good scenes

In many ways, it is the poor man's Running Man. A good story and filmwork outweigh the mediocre acting. Except for the doctor, since I went to law school with him, his acting was superb.

Not great execution of a quality idea. The reality TV representation probably seemed spot on for the 90s reality shows it was mimicking but they've come so far that it feels terribly dated. Execution also drags a short movie out with repetitive bull. Acting wasn't great and I didn't find it as funny as everyone else seems to until a certain cameo happens in the end (not really a cameo as he wasn't famous yet).

I bought this recently on DVD, and even though it was a film it was such a spot on parody, I was expecting ad breaks! Survivor should be like this :-)

Funny and entertaining in a scary sort of way. One could have a discussion about the merits of this as entertainment & the fact that we find this as entertainment & what that means for humans, or be pleased with the tense story line, sensational moments, & unpredictable outcome. Of course since I've only heard about reality TV & not watched it, maybe i have a stilted view.

A topnotch piece of satire. It adroitly manages to avoid falling back to all out spoof. An intelligent imitation of "reality" shows that's spiked with irony but wry enough to be almost "realistic". It is genuinely disturbing at times, as it manages to capture the essence of blockbuster shows with millions of viewers--the contemporary media zeitgeist.

A biting parody of reality television, The Contenders is less interested in contriving a justification for its reality than in mercilessly skewering the formula, object, and function of reality TV shows, and all the better for it.
