There are two distinct halves here. The first part is a light romantic comedy that relies on plot and situational humor, but there's a point when it turns to stunt-heavy gags connected by a thin, drawn out thread in the form of a prolonged and unconventional chase sequence. Despite its overall thematic inconsistency, the film is directed with a smooth pace and visual finesse. There are plenty of fantastic scenes to make it worth watching, I just didn't fall in love with the characters or story.

Run, Buster, run! Long build-up wasn't very funny. Most jokes in the first half I found amusing were presented in inter-titles. In the second half there is one of the greatest chase sequences Buster or any other comic ever did. Film offers thin social commentary on woman, who would marry into money. Few racial jokes might be offensive for some. Still, this is a good silent comedy.

A satisfying first half that's consistently funny, and then a second half that - like Steamboat Bill, Jr.'s - is a triumph of escalating physical stunts and bizarre gags (love the turtle). I was going to give it a score in the 90s when I'd finished, and then I remembered... those damned racist jokes. Why the hell are they there? The mirror gag isn't that offensive, but what about when he dismisses the black woman? All things considered though, a fantastic film.

The first half is amusing, but the second half is truly hilarious. The few racist gags were disappointing, it feels like Keaton should have been above that kind of crap. Oh well, it's not like it ruined the film or anything.

The set-up is a little too long and mostly joke free, but it soon launches into an extended chase sequence that offers some quite marvellous Keaton comedy, as he avoids a number of obstacles in his flight from a mob of angry women - this includes a memorable sequence dodging an avalanche of boulders. Some light racism and antisemitism aside, it's a pleasant enough silent comedy, but not one of Keaton's best.

while i appreciated it while it was going, it's a fairly unmemorable outing for keaton. there are far better keaton movies out there, but this isn't exactly a bad place to start.

Not quite Keaton's best; quite frankly other than the last 15 minutes it's hardly worth watching (that 15 minutes, though, is fucking amazing).

Starts off kind of slow with a few laughs but kind of a one-note joke that starts getting tiresome. Plus there's a bit of old-timey racism that really puts a damper on things. But suddenly something happens. It becomes the full-blown awe-inspiring insanity that only Keaton is capable of.

rather amusing stuff that cements keaton as the superior silent comedian, not that that's saying much. there becomes a point somewhere during the marriage search where it transforms from average romantic silliness to much better slapstick. but there are also racist jokes aplenty.

Keaton demonstrates his greatness in the few instances where physical comedy appears, but Seven Chances is largely a very plain romantic comedy.

Smoothly transitions from a standard comedy situation into the type of full-blown insane stunts that Buster Keaton is known for, without sacrificing the laughs. There's one sour moment with a racist gag that's just bad, but other than that this is a great work. Maybe I will just never get tired of Keaton being chased by massive amounts of people.

About as racist as Crash, which is to say it deals with issues of racism without condoning them. First half is wry and understated while second half is madcap buffoonery. Both work together to keep the film slowly building to its terrific crescendo, a mob of golddiggers.

Per usual, Buster is to be commended for doing all those stunts, but this movie isn't really that funny

Pretty good. That chase scene is just phenomenal, perfectly shot and edited - a pinnacle of slapstick cinema. About the racial jokes.... mirror gag is hilarious and Buster immediately turns down the black woman because he COULDN'T LEGALLY MARRY HER ANYWAY! C'mon, that's 10th grade history and a viewing of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

A fairly basic and plot-bound Keaton (he didn't want to make it, but gave it his all nonetheless). Contains one of the great metaphoric comedy setpieces of movie history as Buster races ahead of an ever-expanding boulder slide.

The plight of the lonesome young man. The ones you want all say "no" and the ones you don't are too eager to say "yes," until you end up rolling down a hill covered in boulders. Man, Keaton knew exactly how it worked.

It took me a few minutes to warm up to this one but I ended up loving it. I think Keaton's humor works better when he's playing a clumsier, more buffoonish character, but the absolutely phenomenal stunt work and hilarious gags in the last half really sold me here. As with every other Keaton film I've seen, by the end I was smiling ear to ear.

Well, if you want a huge Buster Keaton chase scene with at least a couple big set-pieces, this doesn't disappoint, though he definitely had funnier and more inventive pictures out at the time. For some marketing reason, the studio insisted on making the first half hour or so a very run-of-the-mill romantic comedy of the era (the sort of thing they could have used as a vehicle for just about anyone without making much difference, really).

Except for a few mildly racist bits, this is pretty amusing. Mostly good gags, some daring stunts, and of course hapless, lovable Keaton at the center of it. Not terribly ground-breaking or complex, but quite entertaining. I even laughed out loud (something that rarely happens when watching a comedy by yourself) at the window display of broken clocks.

It starts with a great showing of the passage of time by showing a dog growing up. It has some very good use of deep focus, The set ups of Keaton being rejected by all different women are done very well. My personal favorite is when in one long shot we see him talking to one woman up a stair, immediately turn around at the top trying with another downwards. This ends with a massive final chase with impressive stunts and pratfalls, including Keaton at one point running full speed into barbwire.

A fun short movie with a classic premise starts kind of mundanely, but ends up with a fantastic and unforgettable finale with Keaton's normal incredible stunt work and a singular chase sequence. It kind of reminded me of Steamboat Bill Jr. in that the first half was just okay but the second half is truly great. There are a couple of racist jokes that don't age well that drag it down slightly, but given when it was made, not too much.
