It's interesting to see Birkin and Gainsbourg in a giallo, but that's it. And that cat wasn't necessary at all.

Cliched story gets a facelift due to some stylish direction and cinematography. Anton Diffring is always a reliable heavy, but sadly his distinctive voice was dubbed here.

That gorilla in the beginning cracks me up. Actually the fact there is an unnecessary at all is pretty great

The look and style of this movie is great the pacing and acting not so much. Half the time I had no idea what was going on which isn't usually a bad thing for me with gialli but this one felt much longer than its running time.

During a visit to her aunts castle Jane Birkin's family members are killed off one by one (of course) a razor wielding murderer, her nephew is presumed mad, there's a family myth about vampires and also an giant ape is running around.... like so many Gothic giallos, don't watch this for its coherent plot, but for its dark atmosphere and good visuals.

Directed well, and with some nice visual style, this is let down by its various elements not coming together effectively. I'm still not sure what that ape was meant to be about, and the dubbed version I saw featured a couple of instances of sub-Brigadoon Scottish accent. The guy dubbing Gainsbourg wasn't too bad, though. The cast was actually okay. A curious giallo, maybe a bit tame and wishy-washy to be counted among the classics, but a reasonably diverting effort.
