I enjoyed Bridges's character in the way I enjoy Nic Cage characters--it's so unbelievably ridiculous that you begin to appreciate its uniqueness. But other than that, 7th Son is one of those films where you go in with low expectations, but are pleasantly surprised when you realize the bloated whale carcass isn't as nearly as rancid as you were led to believe, and as a result, give it a higher score than it deserves, forgetting that while not shit, the movie was still, for the most part, crap.

Picture Star Wars set in a Middle Earth populated entirely by one dimensional archetypes and you've got a pretty good idea of what this is like. At least Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore seem to recognize they're in a piece of shit and try to ham it up admirably, but the charmless Ben Barnes plays the dopey lead role with annoyingly earnest seriousness. There's a few minutes of fun "giant scaly lizards destroy a CGI village" action near the end but boy do you have to wait forever to get to it.

Yes, Bridges' affected speech impediment is a little annoying & it's a little hard to see Malkin as Malkin as opposed to Julianne Moore, but I'm surprised everyone's so down on this. Maybe it's because I'm not a fantasy connoisseur but the opening was as thrilling as another film's ending & it hooked me right away. The story is filled w/ familiar tropes but it IS genre & it's also been crafted exceedingly well. Lots of action, stunning landscapes & Dykstra's lost none of his gifts for efx.

Entertaining garbage. I would recommend it, but I would also not dream of rating it higher.

Too little of awesome monsters, too much of everything else. Why can't they just meet and fight/befriend new monsters all the time, without all that unnecesary excuse for a character development?

Not without its trashy pleasures, but for the most part ugh. Badly acted, sluggishly paced, unimaginative, dull. Pretty lifeless. Even the entertainment value of Bridges essentially playing Rooster Cogburn: Witch Hunter wears thin after awhile.

Entertaining and nothing more. If you are a fantasy lover, you will have fun if you actively try not to make a parody in your head.

I love watching fantasy movies. But this one was downright ridiculous at times. A good movie isn't about CGI only ... My opinion here : http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.com/2015/04/seventh-son-2014.html

Seventh Son offers little in terms of entertainment value. Given the cast, the film is utterly disappointing, and has one of the weakest screenplays I have ever encountered. The characters are two-dimensional and under-developed, the pacing uneven, and the direction is just bad. The sole positive is the design of the monsters and cities, and the sacking of the city scene showed potential, but overall it's not worthwhile.

Had the potential to be quite a fun fantasy adventure film but seemed obsessed with relentlessly moving the story forward. As a result, there was minimal effort made to world or character build and so as a viewer I felt disconnected from the entire thing and my enjoyment suffered as a result. I can't decide if Ben Barnes was woefully miscast or just suffered from the poor direction. Bridges has his moments but it feels like his character had more potential. Overall a disappointment

The special effects are kind of fun, and Jeff Bridges has a couple of moments, but overall the characters are not very interesting, and the story feels very simple. It's a good watch for an evening when you don't want to do too much thinking.

Seventh Son isn't all bad. It has Jeff Bridges! Besides an alright cast though, it's story stands on small legs, and the CGI direction shouldn't be anything to be proud of either. Yet even despite these unfortunate disappointments, it can still be more than a little entertaining at times if you put your mind aside.

Based on the first book of Joseph Delaney's The Wardstone Chronicles, it's a film that delivers little more than a craggy world full of slashing, roaring and spittle-spewing beasties as it parades through a mishmash of dark fantasy tropes. Spells are cast. Dragons rage. Humans are impaled. Witches burn. Discerning families shift uneasily in their seats. (pluggedin.com)

I enjoyed Jeff Bridges in a fantasy setting. And I thought there was potential. The story was almost potentially decent. But really, didn't make sense in its ultimate creation. A kinda bad generic fantasy movie. I would like to read the book to see what the author actually wrote.

Seventh Son is a bad fantasy movie. You're more likely to fall asleep than get your heart pounding while watching it. It was delayed for a couple of years and probably should have been delayed even longer given how lackluster the entire effort turned out. It's not bad enough to fall into "so bad, it's good" territory, which might've been the only chance it had at saving face. You can't care about anyone, the action isn't exciting on its own, and there's nothing here that you haven't seen before.

Seventh Son was good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hGchskK1cQ Jeff Bridhes probably had no idea what he was saying most of the time which made it great for lil ol' me

I liked Jeff Bridges character, the Spook, but everything else felt a but hammy. This is no Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit by any metric. Apparently it's based on The Last Apprentice series of books by Joseph Delaney, and not the first book of Orson Scott Card's 'Tales of Alvin Maker' series. (Which would have been much cooler...)

A generic and mediocre Fantasy adventure loses points for the almost unbearably stupid romance sub plot. Jeff Bridges was fun as usual and also as usual Djimon Hounsou was sorely underused.

Why even produce an adaptation of a shitty book to begin with, and then add in Clash of the Titans grade garbage set pieces? Misses the point of a project that was meant for 12 year old boys and turns it into another lazy, homogenized product for the lowest common denominator.

Props solely for using 3D right and the utter hotness of Ben Barnes and the five seconds of Kit Harington we got. The story is complete rubbish, and there were so. many. plotholes.

Seventh Son is a perfectly cromulent bit of spectacle fantasy filmmaking. There's nothing particularly remarkable about it, either, and it's unlikely that the film will spawn the franchise it clearly seems to be setting up at times, but it's hardly the worst movie you could see in theaters right now. Again, this may all sound like lukewarm praise, and perhaps that's appropriate, but it's really all that bad.

There are a number things in this film that don't work. It is hard to understand what Jeff Bridges is saying sometimes. The script is all over the place. However there are a number of fun scenes and moments. Overall I would recommend this one as a guilty pleasure.

i would have loved this movie when i was 10. unfortunately im a grown ass man now. biggest complaint: the witches turn into monsters for all of 10 seconds at a time before the budget demands that they turn back into humans(one of the climactic fights bridges simply outright asks the villain to fight as a human not as a dragon...and he complies)...i assume that most of its reported $95mil budget went into convincing jeff bridges to be in it...

Entertaining cast, music, production quality, CGI & special effects. I liked Julianne Moore as the evil mother Malkin & Olivia Williams as mam. Jeff Bridges seemed to have a mouth full of marbles. Ben Barnes was a charismatic lead & Alicia Vikander was pretty sweet. Good performances. Over reliance on CGI. Great costumes & sets. Action, plot, dialog, fantasy world & creatures were way over the top. Crazy mixed up plot on steroids was inconsistent & sometimes silly. Great fun but also ridiculous.

The new millennium has been full of failed fantasy/action movies and "Seventh Son," half of the time they're honestly bad movies, but half of the time they're just not memorable enough to stand out of the pack, the sheer fact that I keep confusing this movie for "The Last Witch Hunter" places this in the second group, even if Jeff Bridges and Vin Diesel look nothing alike.

The main actor is... not very good? But the others are convincing enough, with a well written world around them (I guess, from the book). So, albeit it's unoriginal, the CGI are OK and the story is fine, and just take a break and relax it's nothing important.

If you didn't know this is an adaptation of a great book series, sadly not only does it fail to live up to the book, even judged as if it was a standalone movie it is awful, truly a disaster.

Very decent fantasy. Very similar in style to the Last Witch Hunter, if you liked that movie, this is for you as well. The story is not very strong, the strongest part is the character of Jeff Bridges, but it definitely has enough drama to keep you entertained the first time you see it. It's not necessary worth a second watch, although if you are a fantasy fan like me, you will definitely want another ride. There is just not enough of this style out there. If you are not into fantasy, skip it.
