Pitched oddly between Vlacil's early and late career styles, Shades of Fern attempts a kind of 'poetic realism' that is neither as heightened as his 60's peak or as 'naturalistic' as his other 80's films aside from Mag. The characters are not especially likeable, but Vlacil somehow manages to keep us invested in their journey while maintaining an appropriate (moral) distance, which prevents it from becoming dull during its weak spots. This ambiguity makes a world of difference.

I presume this is Vlacil's 'Badlands'. An obnoxious piece o' shit and his simpering ball and chain evade the police in the picturesque Czech countryside after committing a murder. This is an artistic production that nevertheless fails to do much of interest with the narrative, offering little insight. There are a few stand-out examples of effective camera-work, which recalled moments in Come and See, but these were the best parts of the film for me.
