Well-done noir interestingly sidelines the innocent man wrongfully accused and shifts focus to the back and forth between Sothern and Reagan (with Reagan's no-nonsense doctor especially terrific), mining a considerable amount of suspense from their subtle battle of wills. Wraps things up a bit neatly towards the end and Sothern's motivations occasionally lack sense; a few too many 'fake-outs' in the midsection are frustrating, but can't dull the generally excellent film-making by Jackson.

Sets it up petty good, then drifts a little before things get more intriguing with the child psychology angle. Key things I got out of it was how good Zachary Scott was in a less villainous role, and seeing the future First Lady, Nancy Reagan, ie Davis, in action. This was 2 years before she married Ronald. And a big feather in the cap for 9-year-old Gigi Perreau as the little girl with the trauma. Good experience overall.
