I remember very little, very very little. What little mental image I could conjure up was sitting in a state of aimless boredom wondering why this was worth watching. Then my eyes would wander away from the screen and settle on my lower outstretched body - 'shaft' - wondering what I could do to pass the time instead of watching this aimless crap - 'shaft' - at least masturbation is worth revisiting...

A hodgepodge of weightless killings and social justice, with whatever the opposite of 'a flair for the dramatic' is in regards to how they handle the two major threats. Stuff is resolved, but never in a climactic fashion. Samuel L. Jackson is cool as usual, but is he really Shaft? He makes one sexual comment and kisses another lady on the forehead throughout the 90 minutes of the film, so the first line of The Theme of Shaft might be a bit overstated. Bale is fun but underused as his A.P. self.

This is one of those completely forgettable remakes that doesn't have a single memorable thing about it. It's more or less a tailored star vehicle for Samuel L. Jackson. It has none of the charm of the original shaft and just feels like overproduced junk.

The original Shaft was suave, cool, and level-headed. Though the plot was pretty formulaic, at least the character was enjoyable and funny. The emphasis on anger and social justice infused in this remake results in diminished charm and an occasionally pretty uncomfortable experience (e.g. the beat down of the drug dealer). Jackson is still charismatic and Wright steals the show, but otherwise the movie is dispensable.

Generic actioner stamped with the “Shaft” brand is about par for the course for its era – slick and shiny, not too intense, and in this instance sold by the considerable power of the full flight Jackson Swagger. Shows signs of higher ambition, in its characterisation of Shaft as a “Dirty Harry” rule breaker, but keeps being dragged back to more conventional stylings – for character actor buffs, the sight of Hedaya, Sommer, Bosco and Hingle almost sharing the screen together is a treat.

Plot: John Shaft (Samuel L Jackson) a detective working for police has a new bane of his career who goes by the name of Walter Wade (Christian Bale) a murder who got away with said crime Bail money was given out Its a solid action flick that will satisfy people Entertaining personalities for Shaft (both in action & flirt modes) & rest of the cast will allow you to keep track of all characters actions Dont forget about music inspired by late great Isaac Hayes song about Richard Roundtree's Shaft

Trying to look at this compared to the original is useless. However, on its own, this movie Is not awful. It has a garbage story but Bale and Jackson uplift this as do their interesting dialogue and personalities. This film isnt good, but its not totally bad either.

Much of this movie really isn't very good. The main character is neither interesting nor particularly cool despite being played by Samuel L. Jackson. That being said Jeffrey Wright gives an incredible performance and Christian Bale does a damn decent job as well. How they got such a great cast for this I really don't know.

Going into a movie where Samuel L Jackson plays as Shaft, you'd expect him to be more like, uh, you know... like Shaft? The movie instead became some lame, cheesy crime drama which could have been a lot more entertaining had they went the goofball blackspolitation route.

Why did they make him an actual cop? Shaft operates outside the law, but in cooperation with it. Also switching antagonists half-way through the film was a mistake, and not enough sex.

Maybe I'm ignorant because I live in the country, but when Christian Bale was picking on the black guy in the beginning: I really wondered if any of the phrases he used were actually racist. I was especially shocked that they can make a movie about a racist murderer, but still can't let this murderer actually say anything more racist than, "ai-ght."

Somewhat fun, with some excellent performances from a cast loaded with great character actors. Too bad it has no plot. Wright is so good here he's unrecognizable. He's the villain...sort of. The movie wants that role to be filled by a chilling Bale, but brutally under-uses him. Given the fit between lead actor and source material, the movie’s nowhere near as good as you’d expect. But it’s not without its pleasures either.

There's a reason most iconic 70's films and shows were resurrected as comedies--these characters don't really make as much sense nowadays, or at least they aren't cool in the same way they were before. So I have a hard time buying the Updated Shaft character as being awesome to begin with--but this movie has really entertaining performances from Christian Bale and Jeffrey Wright.

Samuel L. makes a great blaxploitation hero, Christian Bale makes a great blaxploitation villain and Singleton certainly knows what he's doing. But it just seems like it misses some of the marks the old Shaft movies hit so well just by a little, and it costs this film dearly.
