Not a huge fan of action films But honestly this felt more like a buddy action / comedy Anyways I liked it more then I expected I would've liked it better if Junior hadn't been played so dorky I also liked how they tied all three generations together and had them all together in the big ending

Turning Shaft into a boomer vs millennial buddy cop movie is, on paper, the worst thing ever. But Jackson is so damn hilarious, that even as the stupidity of the premise remained on my mind, I belly laughed my way through this movie. The plot is stale, no one else is really giving much of a performance, the action is plain, drab. I won't be revisiting this, but man, did I laugh

The cross-generational conflict of the first couple acts is pretty fun; I even had a few bona fide belly laughs, hence my decent-ish score. Tim Story’s obvious limits as an action director rear their head and really hold back the final act as it goes on though, the climactic action scene pretty much just being the climax of any given episode of a CBS cop procedural. Shaft theme music still god tier tho.

I'm so glad I learned there are more Shaft movies. Thanks to this one, I decided not to watch others and lose more time. Thanks Sam.

I was pleasantly surprised by Shaft (2019), not really having been a fan of the previous incarnations. The film works more for its comedy than its action, and its commentary on inter-generational perspectives makes it that much more entertaining. The film is acutely aware of political correctness; the plot dealing with both islamophobia and sexism, and actually comes across as mildly nuanced and centrist, up until the end scene that abandons logic for a cheapened triple Shaft shot.

Like a few others have noticed, its cool that it doesn't seem especially concerned with being PC. Besides that it's not without its charm, but it's just passable. I was entertained most of the time because of the actors, but the material itself is not that endearing. They do what they can, they heighten this to an "okay" in my eyes, but it hardly impresses in any way. Pretty by the books average.

Jackson, Hall and Roundtree make this completely unnecessary reboot/sequel more watchable than it ought to be. It's more ostensibly marketed at an Afro-American audience than the drab 2000 version, and Jackson hasn't lost any of his edge, but even he can only do so much with lazy material. While the dialogue contains many jabs at political correctness, there is nothing especially clever about it, although it's nice to see a mainstream film that is swimming against the current political tide.

The story is serviceable at best, but it's still an enjoyable movie. SLJ overacts a bit, every now and then, but surprisingly Jessie T. Usher characters grows and by the end you just can't help but enjoy seeing 3 generations of Shafts on your screen. Also, and very surprisingly, the movie aims quite a few jabs at the current craze of political correctness, which at the same time are some of the funniest lines in the movie.

I wasn't gonna see this with it's 31 R/T critic's rating, but then they finally opened the gates for audience ratings which stands now at 94...s'up I said. So I decided to go. No, it anin't no pearl but it might as well have been before the swine that reviewed it. There's definitely several politically incorrect messages goin' on here, and Sammy had to know, or be ignorant beyond belief. Is the political tide shifting in Hollywood? I think so, and has been for longer than we think.

Austin Powers did the whole "parodying its genre via an old school hero struggling to adjust to the modern era" thing over twenty years ago. In spite of the cheap nods to millennials and their "heteronormative cis males" and passing references to the current military PTSD/opioid crises, the story is an incredibly stale procedural that borders on patronizing to the audience.
