I enjoyed this back before everyone was oversensitive to everything. I'm a little terrified to watch it now. It's probably fine. At least the legacy of Tony Robbins has made it through unscathed.

Not far removed from the Sandler movies of the era. The humor is low brow, the writing and production are uninspired, the plot is completely predictable, and the characters are pretty much all stock caricatures. But with all of this middle of the road genericness comes a middle of the road quality too, which means, it could have been a hell of a lot worse, and I mean a lot worse, and for a comedy, average is better than average.

Pretty goddamn bad. I hate it even more because of Gwyneth Paltrow getting "appalled" because when she wore the fat suit in public people wouldn't even make eye contact with her. Get out of your bubble you marginally talented actress and shut the fuck up while you're at it.

The hypocrisy of this movie, how it seems on one level to be about looking past appearences to see a person's inner beauty, while actually mocking and shaming overweight people at every opportunity, really bothered me. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

It's not terrible, but the ending sucks. You can't have ninety minutes of fat jokes and then do a 180 and try to make the movie about "inner beauty", okay? You can't do that. Also George Costanza has a tail for some fucking weird reason and this disturbs me

It's hilarious that someone like Jack Black can be so hell bent on only dating really fit, hot women. He looks like a tubby date rapist....I guess that's what make it a movie, and not reality.

The only funny thing about this film is that, although it apparently condemns shallowness, only one truly shallow individual could appreciate it. Face it: the moralistic ending is just a pretext for political correctness, nothing more than an excuse for more disgusting, gross-out, racist, shallow jokes. What the film says basically is: "Fat people are really ridiculous, aren't they? Let's laugh at them. But keep in mind that personality matters more than appearance after all. Just in case".

At least at the time Jack Black didn't have what it took to make a real romantic comedy, and therefore, this little number ended up being a bit of a lame screwball comedy. The concept is also very weird and lends itself more toward all out comedy, but that clearly wasn't the aim of the film. Meh!

Brilliant social commentary on how fat people are hated universally (even by other fat people). Just kidding. Black dialed down the hyperactivity or cocaine a little so he doesn't annoy so much as to want to turn it off. A few laughs, and giant underpants.

For a movie that tells us to not have shallow tastes or conceptions of other people, it certainly fails on this message for two reasons - Our protagonist would NOT have given a damn about the female lead if it weren't for the fact her appearance were made to be that of a beautiful woman, and it also assumes anyone else that's fairly attractive is a complete asshole as well. Not only is the message poorly wrought and idiotic, but the comedy, acting everything else very thin as well.

I'm usually not a big fan of romantic comedies, but I found this too be a little different. But of course it would be with the Farrelly brothers involved. This was a sweet movie and had some pretty touching moments, especially when Jack Black was with that little girl and he realized she was a burn victim. This wasn't too much of a stretch for the cast involved and it wasn't the funniest movie I've ever seen, but it did it's job and entertained me. Underrated movie.

Wow. Baffling, how a movie that's supposed to accuse superficiality can end up being even more superficial. The clichés in here are so boring and rudimentary...sure, fat people are needy, eat half a cake at once and break furniture all the time, hot women are dumb as shit, single men are insecure and/or homosexual...yawn, yawn, yawn. And zero fun.

This movie takes the most over-used of cliches and makes it worth re-stating: it's what's inside that counts. Comedy moments abound in this legitimate love story. Jack Black at his best. Great concept for a film and executed with comedic balance. An odd, sometimes repulsive, sometimes endearing, but always hilarious way to say "I love you" without being boring. Fantastic film.

Shallow Hal is a sweet comedy that showcases Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow - an unlikely pair as ever there was. Like most Farrelly Brothers movies, Shallow Hal features a cast of characters that you won't find in other classic Hollywood movies, which gives their movies a bit of an underdog status. Coming just after There's Something About Mary, the most classic of the brothers' movies, It felt too wrapped up in it's message instead of just being a funny movie. I still enjoyed it though.

Amusing comedy walks a very fine line in a much defter way than expected; surprisingly compassionate at times and helped largely by Black and Paltrow who both navigate some tricky emotional waters while selling the comedy (Paltrow is especially good at selling hurt and wounded). Being the Farrellys there is some tasteless comedy which is admittedly well-done; Alexander has the market cornered on the likable sleaze role! More substantive and much cleverer than its reputation suggests.

Neither begins nor ends well, but the middle (ie, most of it) is very good indeed, and a quite funny satire of looks and all that. Gwyneth is perfect. Black's shticky approach is a bit overbearing at times, but he scores a number of hits as well...and Alexander puts in his usual dependable performance. Unfortunately things turned schmaltzy and encounter-groupish toward the end, which considerably lessened the effect. Oh yeah, but the credits were a lot of fun!
