It's a shame he wasn't on screen naked longer. Oh, God, the shame pun was intentional, the longer pun wasn't. Yikes! I just watched it for the articles anyways. No big dick. DEAL! I meant deal! I'm going to stop while I'm ahard. AHEAD! Stop while I'm ahead.....ENORMOUS PENIS.

Well shot, and I loved how they didn't bother explaining everything like all other modern movies do. But that said, nothing happened of note until it was too little too late. A re-edit of this and maybe some more dialogue or impactful scenes would be better.

Some impressive scenes but the insights are very familiar, and by the end it drifts into cliche if not rather predictable moralism. Colour filtering is a little too obviously orange/teal. Some of the use of music is excellent, but Escott's original score is exceedingly reminiscent of THE THIN RED LINE. In short, starts very promisingly but eventually proves to be significantly less than the sum of its parts. Even Mulligan's slow singing interlude seemed copied...from ANNIE HALL!

(2nd viewing) Depending on the viewer's openness, this film could easily disenchant or break you. What seemed unaccounted for has since been replaced by McQueen's keen observance; Much remains cleverly hinted at while shedding a light on a disputable subject without trivializing Brandon's damaged persona, who as a result secludes himself in a state of psychological confinement. I had my reservations about it the first time around yet has now hit me like a ton of bricks. A rare find, recommended.

Shame never really ends as it stays with you long after it finishes. Fassbender is absolutely haunting as Brandon who genuinely proves to be one of cinemas most significant and complicated characters. New York itself plays a vital role and I haven't seen a city this well utilized since Fincher's Se7en. An unsettlingly gruelling atmospheric exercise where performance, setting, camerawork and the brilliant directing of McQueen come together perfectly for a remarkable experience.

Fassbender's performance is good but McQueen's artlessly calculated directing and a script which never fully explores or develops on the themes presented prevent this from being any better than average. Predictable, overrated and too reliant on a style which is not as clever or well executed as McQueen seems to think it is.

A thoroughly well-made, and beautifully shot, examination of a man unravelling, held together by a hugely impressive central performance by Fassbender. I definitely got an "Eyes Wide Shut" vibe from it, perhaps prompted in part by the subject matter, and the almost eerie effect of the location and lighting. It maybe veers into melodrama a bit towards the end, but this was a strong, compelling and affecting film.

"Shame contains unblinking truth. I have no doubt it depicts behavior that can be accurately called "sex addiction." The film suggests no help for Brandon, although toward the end, he moves somewhat in the direction of being able to care for another human being. For him, that involves being able to care for himself, despite the truth that he feels unworthy to be known. This is a great act of filmmaking and acting. I don't believe I would be able to see it twice."--Roger Ebert

Manages to be intimate and extremely provocative with its explicit subject matter while never feeling exploitative or crude. It's an impressive balancing act made possible by Fassbender's excellent, understated performance and McQueen's vivid, kinetic direction, which really brought New York - interiors and exteriors - alive. Brandon is fundamentally broken, and so insular as to be a cipher, but is nonetheless empathetic throughout.

It's a deep exploration of the nature of addiction, but there's also this layer of guilt (or maybe another word that may or may not be the title of the movie) behind male sexuality that really resonated with me. All levels of production are absolutely stellar and Fassbender & Mulligan are brilliant in their troubled roles. It's a story so personal and intimate, which is ironic considering that empathy is the one thing Brandon can't handle. McQueen is proving to be someone nobody should ignore.

Brandon's single fear is to be caught in the middle of his private routine. He intimidates women with long looks -- or shots, as McQueen suggests in a pictorial perspective --, but he doesn't seem to feel anything for them, unless an unrestrained desire to go to bed with them. He can't connect with women by any kind of commitment -- his desire ends when he reaches the orgasm. When he's alone, he is dragged into porn and masturbation. Sissy is his only true, deep bond. Shame left me desolated.

Fassbender's nuanced portrayal of a man unable to have real human relations made this one of the most honest and uncompromising movies I've seen in a long while. Plot-wise it does come dangerously close to caricature towards the end, but between McQueen's storytelling and Fassbender's performance the movie stays hauntingly real.

Fassbender and Mulligan are amazing, and McQueen's direction is razor-sharp. I feel compelled to re-watch Hunger after this. After mutilating The Battle of Algiers in Hunger, Steve McQueen tackles Truffaut's The Man Who Loved Women. Unfortunately, for McQueen humanity has nothing to do with brain activity or emotions, and people are actually robots controlled by hormones. The result is awful even by porn flick standards.

A methodical film, yet full of empathy even in its austerity. Fassbender is able to convey a man who's broken but not bad. Within the limits of his emotional range he tries to do the right thing, the rest is driven by addiction. Much of his progression is told by suggestion and it is to McQueen's credit that he finds the right visual cues to guide our understanding.

Everything that didn't work in Hunger for me fell right in place here the moment I saw the opening. Just overindulgent. Gratuitous nudity is fine, but it took the front seat from plot or stronger characterization. Plus, the downward spiral at the end seemed to say, "Turned away from his usual hotspots, he's so desperate for a sexual fix, he even goes to gay sex clubs!". I dunno, just too thin for my liking - Fassbender's character took a piss on screen long before he had any dialogue.

A small straightforward weepie from the 'people are bad because they're sad' bucket of story one-liners. Fassbender does well, but there's not a whole lot of room for his character's personality, trapped in the grips of the excessively dramatic downwards spiral, that the fatalistic narrative commands. Surely a more nuanced movie could have been made about a desperate sex addict. And I by 'a desperate sex addict' I mean me. And by 'me' I mean oh shut up.

it's amazing how much ludicrous, obvious, forced, played out horseshit filmmakers can get away with if they cloak it in a veneer of artsy detachment and operatic darkness. the one who really comes across as pitiable here is mcqueen; his intentions, his vanities and pretensions, are utterly transparent. also i like how it goes all lynchian when he gets his gay on; when cocks start touching cocks you just KNOW there's tragedy around the corner.

McQueen's second film is a good case of the 'almosts'. It's almost a great character study. It's almost an insightful film about the nature of addiction. It's almost a brilliant mood piece about the loneliness of contemporary urban life. All the necessary ingredients are present: appropriate casting, meticulous visuals, a haunting, if somewhat derivative, score, yet the pieces don't really come together, and there is whiff of petty moralism that feels reductive and unnecessary.

Would have liked more of a back story, to see why the main characters had such difficulties. I did get a bit of an American Psycho vibe, but I seem to be the only one. I was not a big fan of McQueen's previous effort, Hunger, and I felt a similar indifference about this. While the directing and acting are virtually unassailable, and the dialogue has an appropriately naturalistic quality, Shame lacks an engaging enough narrative to match the power of its desolate theme. It's absolutely beautiful but very one-note until the ending, which comes out of nowhere and spoils the understated mood.

Unbelievable that this didn't get widespread recognition in the US; this film demonstrates a significant difference between gratuitous sex and a mature, sophisticated analysis of our culture's darkest fantasies. The long takes make the film so much more real, and the parallels between the main character and NYC make the emotions of the film stay with you that much longer. It can be viewed as a character study, or a reflection of how our culture's private fantasies impact our overall values.

Beautifully crafted by McQueen, and provides Fassbender and Mulligan with terrific acting showcases, but a pointlessly obscure narrative (eliminating any definite information on a back story for the lead characters) means that the point of the story is ultimately narrowed to unhappy people making themselves miserable; not necessarily a bad topic for drama, but frustrating when the characters are so skimpily defined.

Fassbender's a truly great actor but only those who delight in watching him THINK will enjoy this. Presumably McQueen's intent was to raise awareness about how legitimate & horrible sex addiction is by crafting a 120 minute social service announcement. What there is of the narrative is presented in long, lingering static shots that, for some reason, signify grand artistic vision in the eyes of many critics. What it actually is however, is boring. This is a pretty interesting character study that joins its protagonist already in the dearth of his addiction. There's not really much escalation here, and considering the subject matter & NC-17 rating, it's surprisingly harmless, if tragic. Still, everything about the production is assured: there are some great moments of honesty, including an absolutely charming first date scene. And I love, love Fassbender's arresting, ambiguous gaze that walks a fine line between longing and violation.

Expected so much more. Way too melodramatic and not as shocking as you would hope considering the material. McQueen is obviously very capable but his material was a bit weak this time. Great performance from Fassbender though. This would've made a better TV show

A haunting story of a man who's life has been pushed out of trails. Sex was the way to drown it. Rougher the better. Sex was the drug that led into it, sex was way to handle it. And the result was dirty and devastating. Was Fassbender New York? There was lots of levels of shameness in here. And it's up to viewer does it never end. Fassbender was stunning in lead.
