I liked this more than my family did. I actually really dug the slow moments and drama. I think the way that was handled was pretty clever, especially once that reveal about Shang-Chi’s past is shown right before the climax. That’s not to undermine the choreography and action, which is all extremely well done and the biggest reason to see this movie. It sticks to Marvel’s signature formula, but it’s really well acted and stylish enough that it works. One of Marvel’s very best.

An entertaining diversion with high highs (the fight on the bus makes the brawl in 'Nobody' look like kiddie stuff) and a few low lows (all, except for the final messy action sequence with The Great Protector, courtesy of a very annoying Awkwafina). Wenwu might not be as formidable as Thanos or as fun as Loki or Hela, but thanks to Leung's performance and the fact that the nuanced dramatic stakes are so well set up, he easily ranks among those as one of the best MCU villains so far.

Tony Leung was more captivating. Not much tie-in with MCU. Inevitable comparison w/Black Panther. While BP was a visual spectacle and handled race well, this was a dull grey CGI-fest with an ok story about family. Liu lost his interesting Asian-American identity when he left San Francisco but went to a fantasyland with Chinese themes (but not really China). Yeoh was muted and Kingsley was sidelined. Fav scenes: bus fight; riding on a water dragon seemed real.

Easily the best non-ensemble Marvel movie. I noted a moment when Shang-Chi is punched in the nuts, and several audience members groaned. They did so, because not only is the action amazingly shot so we can follow what is happening (save for the last obligatory pixel fest finale), it's also grounded, so the audience feel invested in every punch and kick. A funny, charming and beautiful surprise hit of the year for me.

Shang-Chi is about what I expect from a Marvel movie at this point. It has the charismatic leads, tongue-in-cheek writing, and some interesting action sequences. Honestly, the cinematography and choreography are it’s best attributes, it makes what is otherwise a pretty average Marvel film, a cut above it. I do appreciate it’s attempt at a origin stories, but Simu Liu isn’t all that interesting, and the family tension doesn’t really do much for me. This is decent, if not slightly meh.

This was visually impressive, well cast and entertaining, even if I don't feel hugely engrossed in the story; it started more strongly than it finished, in my view. Felt like a bit of a side-project to the rest of the Marvel films as there wasn't a huge amount of connection with them. It'll be interesting to see if/how the characters are integrated with other Marvel films. Decent.

With all of the low hanging fruit out of the way, Marvel has run out of heroes I've heard of, which is kind of a good thing because I can't nit pick about inaccuracies or rewriting elements. While it remains unclear to me exactly what makes Shang-Chi "super", his movie is certainly super fun. It's a non-stop thrill ride and it might not be breaking new ground, but I think Marvel can probably keep coasting with their current formula for a decade longer without losing any money, or my attention.

I can somewhat respect the first half because it's at least an attempt to have choreographed fight scenes and they do use some pretty cool setpieces, even if the plot and humor are mundane garbage. But by the second half, the pacing becomes a total slog as they go through explaining and showing so much shit in the most simplistic plot imaginable with fight scenes becoming focused on big, bland displays of CUHRAYZEE special effects that it became hard for me to care about anything by the end.

the choreography is top notch, and there are some seriously fun set pieces, although they can't obscure the fact that marvel played way too safe with this one. shang-chi as a hero is pretty milktoast, his "platonic" friendship is just plain weird, and his complicated relationship with his father, who's supposed to be the villain, takes the wind out of the sails of the plot. too much screen testing, too little experimenting with this one.

If anyone says Shang-Chi was a favorite comic character… they’re lying, you’re in the Buzzfeed mailroom, get out while you can. Yet the MCU made him one of their most holistic characters: there’s a fidelity to the Xianxia genre, each actor is memorable, and matures the mildly infantile plot into a genre masterclass. Leung adds a welcome regality, but the MVP is the late Brad Allen, Jackie Chan’s confidant (the style not only shines, it glows) who gives the fights their authenticity.

Fairly offbeat and colourful standalone Marvel adventure, with nice performances all around (Leung in particular), which arguably should have stretched its extensive plot out on several movies, giving it time to breath, and should have had the balls to keep more dialogue in Chinese which would have made a hell of a lot more sense in several dramatic scenes.

While its CGI is poor even by Marvel’s subpar standards (until the unnecessary dragon battle, which features a few beautiful tableaux) and the characters fail to plumb any real emotional depths, a mostly straightforward story, exciting choreography, and effective humour more than make up for its weak points to produce a really entertaining film—its best feature, perhaps, being that it hardly feels like a Marvel movie at all. Plus everyone is really good looking and not white.

Cool rings, cool dragons, not a lot else. Absolutely constant exposition in the form of backstory and flashbacks that never seem to end, but I guess it distracts from how little motor the surprisingly uneventful plot has. After an hour of canned (if occasionally charming) chemistry between Simu Liu and Awkwafina, it’s a blessed relief when [REDACTED] shows up halfway through for some genuine laughs before being completely sidelined for the rest of the movie.

I can't grade this fairly since they've completely gutted the character & concept from the 70s comic & instead of a more adult & introspective outsider Bruce Lee/James Bond hybrid we get a very kid-friendly fantasy w/ some martial arts thrown in. I can say the martial arts are adequate (w/ lots of editing & CGI to hide the fact that the lead isn't that trained), but certainly don't live up to the Master of Kung Fu title. John Wick & Donnie Yen have better fight scenes & Akwafina is no Leiko Wu.

If you dig the MCU you will likely dig this. Wenwu was a solid but not amazing villain. Would have liked to see Dweller have more of an impact. You come for the martial arts though: it's not the finest cinema has to offer but some of it is really inspired (bus scene comes to mind). I was just entertained by this all around and now care about Shang-Chi. I need to note again that I just love superhero movies.

I knew the aesthetic was gonna get me, and it definitely did. Really simplified but elegant storytelling, sometimes-dazzling visuals, and plenty to lead into the coming films (which obviously is important in MCU films). Awkwafina stays underrated, and it's nice to see Destin Cretton get something this big and really nail it. I'm very glad that this deep in, Marvel can still introduce characters, with plausible deniability as to where they've been up to now, and make the audience give a damn.

Shang-Chi is a good film, that (rightly) plays into the Chinese fantasy genre; with magic, dragons, fighting & family drama (but no apotheosis), adding a different flavour to the MCU. Still the film is neither novel nor does it feel that integrated into the MCU (barring the mid-credit scene). Liu is a solid lead & Awkwafina good support. Leung delivers a good performance, but his character can't resolve the poor writing of his set-up. My favourite moments were Kingsley's unrelated asides.

Works best when it keeps the action scenes grounded. Well, that term is very relative with this kind of colorful superhero nonsense of course. But once we get to Wuxia Narnia, it all becomes an unengaging and even kinda embarassing boilerplate copy paste job. And they didn't even have the ring- I mean balls to feature the glory that is Fin Fang Foom. Cowards!

I haven't seen fight sequences this fun and entertaining since John Wick, and Kill Bill before that. The first 3/4 of the film was fun, bright, exciting, and generally well written. The special effects in this movie make me excited for the next phase of Marvel movies. The last 1/4 of the movie turns into a CGI vomitfest between the BBG and the protagonist that is mostly dull and not entertaining. Simu Liu is going to be phenomenal in the MCU. I look forward to the next Shang Chi film.

It starts off very promisingly, establishing interesting new lore for the MCU as well as introducing the incredibly charismatic Simu Liu as the titular character. The martial arts action scenes are some of the best action scenes in the MCU and the incomporation of asian culture into the universe is also done very smoothly.Sadly as the movie goes on it loses some of that intial spark starting to feel more and more like a run-of-the-mill marvel film culminating in a very boring,CGI-heavy finale.

Character stuff was good to start off, and I liked the arc of pops, but the lead is basically a nothing character-wise after the opening few scenes, and anyone else that registers a pulse thereafter feels disconnected from the action. Also, the CGI looked bad, and if your movie's based on that, you might want to spruce it up.

Failed to trigger any kind of emotional response from me. Characters go from bland to annoying. The plot is weak, but the fights choreography and visuals manage to make up for it... until they don't. It seems Marvel has a hard time finding anything better to do with their third act than giant CGI battles.

After a long MCU break in theaters, they're back to delivering a legitimately good movie. We truly are a spoiled generation, movie-wise. Not so much with that whole coronavirus thing but hey I take what I get. Felt like a Zhang Yimou tribute at times, I loved that vibe. Sadly it's yet another origin story, but not the boring kind at least. It succeeded in making me care for the character, hope to see more of him in upcoming MCU movies.

A breath of fresh air into the MCU. The martial arts combat is great, the characters are more grounded than normal. The humour mostly feels natural and not shoehorned in. The ending goes nuts and over the top into a CGI mess, but with its completely fresh aesthetic it remained entertaining. Great cast too, particularly Tony Leung. I liked the soundtrack too.

This is the first bad MCU movie since Thor 2. Shang-Chi is tiresome, overlong, boring, derivative, predictable and cliché. The CGI is often bad, especially early on locations just look fake. The first half is still the better one, after an hour i lost interest. The schmalzy family stuff feels disingenuous. The fortune cookie wisdoms also get on your nerves. There's just nothing particularly interesting about this film, even the fights wear out their welcome.

One of the better MCU origin films. The humor is hit or miss, but the characters, story and acting are good. The visuals, cinematography and action are great, loved the rings as weapons, and the set pieces are far more inventive than I expected (that sky scraper scene was phenomenal). Third act is more fantasy based than I expected, but still pretty unique from the usual Marvel stuff. Definitely looking forward to seeing this character return in the future.

Shang-Chi is the return to form movie Marvel needed to bounce back off on. With solid performances, great setpieces, fun action sequences, and some emotional depth and humour to it, it’s also paced well for the runtime. The direction is solid and the characters get a good amount of time to develop with well placed flashback sequences. The martial arts fights are pretty well done and the CGI creatures look interesting with their designs. Marvel proves they can still make great stuff.

Shang-Chi combines some of the most inspired fight choreography with some of the blandest plotting in the MCU, and only comes out relatively unscathed thanks to the dramatic and/or comedic strengths of Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina. Simu Liu is charming (and fit) enough as the lead, but I think I would have enjoyed this a little more if they had kept it out of the larger MCU entirely and kept the last act CGI nonsense to a minimum.

I really liked about half of this movie, and I equally disliked about half of it. They threw in far too much CGI nonsense at the end and basically ruined it. Shame on the special effects department who lost all sense of what makes a movie good. You could just cut out the last 20 minutes and it would be about twice as good. It was still worthwhile to see the stuff that was fun and good. But I felt totally burned after enduring that awful ending with so much ridiculous CGI crap.

Full of heart, culture, and very fun action sequences, Shang-Chi is a very worthy addition to the MCU. Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh bring so much depth and life to their roles, Simu Liu gives us a relatable and compelling new hero, and Awkwafina is only sometimes annoying. My biggest complaints are some bad CGI, an over reliance on flashbacks, and a really annoying "comedy" driven subplot with a formerly forgotten character. The good definitely outweighs the bad, thankfully.

first half of the film was way better than the second half. in the first part, the film has a real story and the interaction between the characters is supported by reasonable motives. the use of flashbacks is not bad and helps us better understand those actions. also, it has couple of good fight scenes. however, in the second part, the film turns into a nonsense drama filled with typical marvel actions. still, it might be considered as a decent "superhero movie" because it is not much american.

Proving that the MCU series has now been perfected to a fine, glossy and safe art. First half works best, spotlighting Liu and Awkwafina’s bubbly chemistry and throwing them into action sequence after action sequence that would (almost) make Jackie Chan proud; the second half is a far more conventional hew to the established formula, relying on amusing shenanigans from Kingsley, and genuinely soulful work from Yeoh and Leung, to make you forget you have seen this same approach many times before.

Definitely the best Marvel movie of 2021 so far, with fantastic action and some of my favourite MCU humour to date (and it makes way more sense in this movie than in Widow or Eternals). Liu is a great, charming lead, Awkwafina is at her least annoying, and Leung is a fascinating villain, even if his motivation is bizarre - “YOU GUYS ARE HIDING MY WIFE” “uh, what? she’s dead” “NO YOU ARE HIDING HER GIVE HER BACK”. Something about this makes it such a great addition, and great start for post-Thanos MCU. Maybe it’s the best fight choreography the franchise has seen. Too much time is spent on the melodramatic family stuff while not enough time is spent setting up important plot points or story beats so when they occur they come across as entirely convenient and lack any emotional weight. I was skeptical about the film because of some identity politics issues being pushed around the movie. But gladly, this isn’t a “white man bad” movie but rather stands on its own feet and celebrates Chinese culture without the need to tear Western one down. This gives great Wuxian flare to the fight scenes. Also, BK is a fucking riot and steals all of his scenes. Great popcorn fun - slightly above MCU middle tier. Slightly above average Marvel movie. I disagree with some of the casting choices (Awkwafina for example), but it is what it is. Marvel are definitely doing a better job with their villains ever since Thanos. Overall it's a quite solid addition to the MCU.

It's a visual delight with a very well thought out story. It doesn't let comedy over shadow the necessary moments where tension and progression need to occur. It's one of the more cohesive entries in the MCU and it's a very refreshing change of pace. The CGI is top notch as are the action sequences near the end. It definitely keeps you engaged through out and delivers quality when it matters most. Solid movie.

1885: good action but the fantasy part was weak!

Like a Hong Kong movie, except it's a Hollywood thing. Great production, fairly entertaining plot, the action was exciting. So a successful entry into that Marvel Universe people love so much, even if it to me didn't feel like a Marvel movie. But at this point in the game that's not necessary a bad thing.

Shang-Chi is really good. There are culturally intriguing mysteries in the film, and it's fun to see them. It's also exciting to explore the rich world of the the story. I can't say I had much expectation, so I'm glad I loved it. One final note: The soundtrack was delightful, I will listen to the whole album.

I so wanted to like this after all of the hype but it ended up just feeling incredibly overrated. It is yet another typical Marvel origin story but with a Wuxia skin over it this time. How innovative. I guess I liked some of the grounded hand-to-hand martial arts scenes. Wish there had been more of that but of course, in typical Marvel fashion, the 3rd act turns into a bunch of CGI things fighting other CGI things. Yawn.

Would have been happy with 8 or 9 but 10 was a pleasure.
