She Monkeys

One of those films I struggle to really see the point of. A few issues in the mix, puberty, nature of love, repression, none of them particularly interesting, none particularly clarified.

A coming of age story contrasting two sisters, one approaching puberty and one at the tail end. It has a discomforting foreboding tone, though the content itself has a lot of levity, which gives it a unique atmosphere of dread and hope that matches the confusion and contradictions of that period of life surprisingly well. It can feel a bit underwhelming at times, but it's very effective with the slice of life it takes on.

Emma and Cassandra are both on a rural Swedish equestrian vaulting team, and strike up a friendship; it soon becomes clear that Cassandra wants to be more than a friend to Emma. Meanwhile, Emma's much younger sister has a crush on their older cousin, which must naturally go unrequited. It's a sad, very disturbing look at human relations gone awry; if it ultimately doesn't add up to much more than a melancholy anecdote, the superb performances and perceptive script make it a very compelling one.
