Journalistic procedural about how the Harvey Weinstein story was investigated, about on par with Spotlight. Honestly contains no big mystery or any shocking revelations. Dialogue is rudimentary, emotions are what's to be expected, and unless you're a terrible person you always know whose side you're on, so there's no challenge or insight here either. With all that said, it's pretty watchable for the payoffs in the form of somebody calling and saying she'll go on record.

the moment where someone hands someone else a printout of a tweet is exactly what I imagine the New York Times offices to be like

It's not a bad movie, it's just dry and perfunctory. It's another one of those "Journalism: The Movie" type movies in the vein of something like All The President's Men or Spotlight, except not anywhere near as compelling. The movie just sort of marches towards an inevitable conclusion and then its over. Mulligan and Kazan work well as leads, and the supporting cast is filled out nicely. Again, there's nothing terribly wrong with the movie. It just feels kinda rote and unspecial.

It's a good reminder of what happened and would be a good introduction to the topic if you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years or so, but this was ultimately a little too straightforward for me. Not nearly as good as All The President's Men or Spotlight--more in the vein of The Post as a second tier journalism film. It's fine and everything, it just is more or less a blow by blow recitation of the facts with little added. The screenplay forces some somewhat wooden acting as well.
